One of my favorite months, National Women's Small Business Month, celebrates the mission of women who are seeking out to serve, impact, and create capital from their innate gifts from the feminine. I've had the honor to become a portrait photographer in 2008, and since, I've created millions of photographs of human beings. Within those sets of photos, I have had the honor of capturing business owners that serve their clients from the heart, their brand, and their unique way. Something you may not know about portrait photographers: we get to do the amazing work of hearing where a business owner visions themselves to be, and we guide the photo shoot to make it happen! From makeup, wardrobe, lighting, location, and creating a variety of posed or actionable photographs, we literally CREATE what you see. Photographing Children: The Secret to Capturing Real Joy ? If you’ve ever tried to photograph a child, you know this: It’s not just about the camera settings. It’s about creating an experience. (And it’s easier said than done.) Here’s what I’ve learned after years of photographing kids: 1. Make it a game, not a photo session.   The moment you say, “Smile,” the magic is gone. Instead, let them play, tell a joke, or even ask them to show their silliest face. The best shots happen when kids are being themselves. 2. Get on their level (literally).   Kneel down, lie on the ground, or crouch—whatever it takes to see the world as they do. This perspective captures their innocence and curiosity in a way that adults often miss. 3. Embrace the chaos.   Kids won’t sit still. They won’t always cooperate. And that’s okay. The messy moments—the unexpected laughter, the spontaneous hugs—are often the ones that mean the most. 4. Capture the in-between moments.   It’s not just about the big smile; it’s about the stolen glances, the quiet moments, and even the tears. These are the photos that parents treasure because they’re real. 5. Let go of perfection.   No perfectly posed shot can compete with a genuine expression. I've just had a tremendous piece of email marketing from Suzy at the Centre for Ageing Better. This includes 5 great tips on avoiding ageism in your imagery. I've got a client who works with older people and people with mobility issues and we were getting pretty frustrated with the stereotypical imagery in mainstream libraries. I've viewed 100s over the past few months. Mainstream picture libraries have ... ❌ Too many images of older people and people in wheelchairs being 'helped'. Not enough images of people just doing regular stuff, getting on with life. ❌'Couple' images where the man is old and the woman is about half his age. ❌ So many images of older people in wheelchairs with a rug over their knees. Way too many rugs. ❌ A lot of people dressed in beige. I never imagined my name would become a verb, yet here we are, with clients excitedly declaring they've been "Boried." It sounds funny, even quirky, but it's also meaningful. "Being Boried" is more than a photoshoot. It's about embracing your story, celebrating your journey, and uncovering the beauty that's uniquely yours. Karin was one of the first to say it. I still remember her shoot back in 2018. Like many of my clients, she was hesitant and a little unsure of the camera. But when I posted her photo—one that I knew captured her essence and radiance—the flood of positive comments poured in. What she once doubted, others saw as beautiful, and powerful. The photo brought out what was always there; it simply needed the right perspective. This is what "getting Boried" truly means: seeing yourself in a way you might never have before. My approach isn't just about posing or lighting (though those matter too!)—it's about revealing the confidence, elegance, and strength within every person I photograph.
