Timing chains were manufactured long before timing belts. Older cars are likely to have a timing chain instead of a timing belt. Timing chains are typically so long-lasting that they often outdo the lifetime of the car. Most timing chains will cover you for up to 200,000 miles.

These figures are used in the calculation of life ratings, but bearings should not be subjected to anywhere near such loads in normal application unless you don't expect them to last very long.

The timing belt is the newer version of the timing chain. Timing belts operate much more quietly than timing chains. They’re also stronger than timing chains. If your timing belt did snap, it would be far less likely to damage your engine than a timing chain. A broken timing belt has a far less costly impact than a broken timing chain.

However, your car will only use one of these components, a timing belt (also known as a cambelt) or a timing chain. So, what is the difference between timing chains and timing belts?

However, wear and tear does affect timing belts more than timing chains. Most timing belts last between 60,000 and 100,000 miles. It’s important to check the condition of your timing belt during your self-services to catch any signs of damage early.

Heavy duty bearing types such as 6200 or 6300 series may take axial loads of up to 50 percent of the static radial load rating. Thin-section deep groove ball bearings can only support axial loads of between 10 and 30 percent of the bearing's static radial load rating due the shallower raceways.

A timing chain looks a bit like a bike chain and can be lubricated with engine oil. Tensioners controlled by oil pressure in the engine hold the timing chain in place. If the oil pressure is low, the chain tensioners can lose pressure and offset engine timing.

If long life is required, it is preferable to limit the actual load to between 6 per cent and 12 per cent of a bearing’s dynamic load rating. Heavier loads can be tolerated but life will be shortened.

There are multiple ways that manufacturers can take to ensure a bearing has a long and successful life. The first step is to limit the radial load to between 6–12 per cent of a bearing's dynamic load rating. Although a bearing is able to tolerate a much higher load, its life will be shortened.

A Newton is defined as the force that will accelerate a mass of one kilogram at the rate of one meter per second per second (or 1 m/s²). Since the force of gravity at the Earth's surface is 9.80665 m/s², 1 Kgf = 9.80665 Newtons but, to keep it simple, we say 1 Kgf = 10 Newtons.

A timing belt (or cambelt) runs through a series of pulleys with belt tensioners. The belt is made of rubber and reinforced with steel wire. There is no metal-on-metal contact, so lubrication isn’t necessary.

However, car manufacturers replaced timing chains with timing belts for a reason. If your timing chain does break, it will fill your engine with tiny pieces of chain and most likely cause severe damage to your engine. If your timing chain snaps, you’ll probably need a new engine. At this point, you might as well replace the whole car.

Full complement ball bearings use a filling slot machined into the inner and outer rings. Under axial load, this slot can interfere with ball rotation so full complement bearings are not recommended for axial loads.

You should have your timing chain or timing belt replaced before it becomes so old that it’s likely to snap and cause further, more expensive damage. If in doubt, have a mechanic check the condition of your timing chain/belt.

We always express load ratings for bearings in Kgf (kilogramme force). That is the force exerted by a mass of one kilogramme at the Earth's surface. Elsewhere, you may see force expressed in Newtons.

Please note, these figures are based on pure axial load. Additional radial loads or moment (misalignment loads) will have an impact on the axial load capacity. To exceed the total recommended limits for combined loads will have a detrimental effect on bearing life.
