As energy prices climb and grid stability becomes a concern, investing in home battery storage is increasingly practical ? ⚡ Earlier this week, the AFR highlighted Brad Parmenter’s story. Brad decided to install a home battery system to store excess solar energy. The payoff? Lower electricity bills, reduced reliance on the grid, and even extra income by feeding energy back during high-demand periods. Brad's electrification journey is a perfect example of how investing in home batteries can make financial sense while supporting a greener, more sustainable future. Noting that electrification of our homes is one the best ways to bring down emissions and bills, I looked at what Australian states were doing to help their residents get off gas and electrify their homes. Tasmania ranks as the best state for electrification policy, with incentives for electrification for electrification including batteries, induction cooking, heat pumps, and aircon, all part of their zero-interest loan scheme (The ACT while not a state also offers a similar loan scheme). All other states except WA are offering a range of different subsidies or loans. WA is sadly a standout for inaction in this space offering nothing that I could find. This was a bit of a complex trawl of multiple government websites to pull this together (thanks Lucinda for the first draft) so we might have missed some bits so feel free to correct us and we will correct, update, and reshare. But here's to a 2025 that accelerates the renewable energy and electrification journey.

Renewable Energy: A Smart Choice for Homeowners! ? The latest draft GenCost report from CSIRO and Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) highlights the energy future for Australia, and the message is clear: renewables and energy storage lead the way for affordability and reliability. Key Takeaways for Homeowners: 1️⃣ Nuclear power is no faster or cheaper than renewable alternatives. In fact, nuclear projects take over 15 years to build, and costs keep rising. 2️⃣ Renewables like solar and wind, paired with modern storage solutions, offer similar benefits with shorter project timelines and lower costs. Battery prices are dropping fast—down by 20% last year alone! This makes renewable energy storage more accessible and affordable for families. 3️⃣ Energy experts agree that the path forward is new renewable energy, supported by reliable storage options like batteries and pumped hydro. It’s not just about the environment—it’s about making the smart financial choice for your home. ? Curious about what these advancements could mean for your household? By electrifying your appliances, you can enjoy lower energy bills and a healthier home. But it doesn't have to be done all at once. Lori, mum of two, is slowly upgrading her home. Lori replaced her gas ducted heating to reverse cycle AC and saved $400 on her winter bill this year. Next up, she's upgrading her ageing gas hot water heating system. "Once we've fully electrified our house, I'm going to throw a party. It's going to be my reward for getting off gas."? Have you made a plan about which gas-powered appliance you will electrify next? #electrifyeverything

Yesterday, the NSW Government asked homeowners to reduce energy use between 3–8pm to avoid blackouts. Why? During heatwaves, coal and gas-powered generators often struggle, leading to reduced output or shutdowns (1 in 3 yesterday) But why should you suffer in the heat and not switch on your air-con when you need it most? There is a solution! Adding a home battery to your rooftop solar doesn't just reduce your bills, it provides energy independence – giving you peace of mind that you can always power your devices when you need them most. Next week, our battery benefits calculator launches. Keep your eye out! Visit 28watt.com.au to find out more.

Rewiring Australia backs the Victorian Government's proposed rule to phase out expensive gas appliances, which will lower energy bills and emissions for households across the state. "Thanks to this policy, more Victorians will have lower energy bills and healthier homes," said CEO Dan Cass. "We encourage all Victorians to electrify as many appliances as they can afford and get solar if they don't already have it. This will mean their energy bills are no longer held hostage by international gas companies." Read our full response here: https://bit.ly/4gdzU7u https://lnkd.in/gAmX4E5K
Thinking of selling your home? Energy efficiency could be your secret weapon ⚡ Next year, NSW will trial disclosing energy efficiency ratings in sale and lease contracts before making it mandatory. Real Estate Institute of Australia director Jacob Caine was quoted in the AFR last week saying: “For owners with lower [energy efficiency] rankings today, their property is worth less than they think it is… There’s absolutely no doubt this will become a key indicator for the buying public out there and the selling public.” But it’s not just an issue for homeowners. Lenders will also want to reduce the emissions and insurance risks of assets in their mortgage portfolios. You can read the full article below ?
