At level 2, you can create any Common magic item that isn’t a potion, scroll, or cursed. Once you hit level 6, you can make any Uncommon Armor, Wand, or Weapon that isn’t cursed. At level 10, it’s any Uncommon Ring or Wondrous item that isn’t cursed. Finally, at level 14 it’s any Rare Armor, Ring, Wand, Weapon, or Wondrous item that isn’t cursed.

The two don’t even compare. I mean, sure, Artificers come back from the dead once per day by disintegrating a magic item as a reaction to having 20 hit points instead of 0. But they lose a pretty big feature and gain one that, at the 20th level, is much less useful. Adding +1d6 to an ability check is a great benefit at low levels, but by the time you’re level 20, there are much bigger fish to fry.

But Artificers aren’t just about making magic items. Which is what you’d hope. Otherwise, the whole class would just be a magic item delivery system. And that’s kind of what the game is if you think about it.

They even have a form of Arcane Recovery. Artificers in the Unearthed Arcana can drain one of their created magic items, disintegrating it into a 1st or 2nd-level spell slot, depending on rarity.

The bearings are tightly packed in a grease-filled, waterproof, sealed metal ring. This housing, called a race, is located inside the hub, and each wheel has one. Wheel bearings have a Herculean responsibility: They are engineered to support the vehicle’s entire weight.

But is this a case of “first draft, big changes coming,” as we saw with some of the Cleric/Warlock Unearthed Arcana playtests? Or are we going to get what we get and like it, as we did with some of the more maligned changes to the Rogue that people were hoping would change?

Wheel bearings connect a car’s wheels to the axles. They allow wheels to turn with minimal friction. Though wheel bearings are low-maintenance parts, they are important safety components of a vehicle’s braking, steering, and suspension systems. The one-piece hub assembly, between the drive axle and the brake disc or drums, incorporates the hub, wheel bearings, ABS (anti-lock braking system) wheel speed sensor, and mounting flange.

But Artificers get some pretty nice quality-of-life updates in the new Unearthed Arcana. Along with a couple of nerfs that, in my opinion, weren’t necessary.

The typical sounds of worn-out wheel bearings are squealing and/or growling. The sound intensifies as vehicle speed increases. Try to pinpoint the location of the noise because it will identify the location of the worn-out bearings.

Worn bearings may cause a vehicle to pull to the left or right when brakes are applied. The direction the vehicle pulls signals where the worn bearings are located, on the left or right side of the vehicle. However, this can also signal brake rotor or brake caliper problems.

If you hear a clicking sound that increases in frequency as the vehicle accelerates, there could be a problem with the wheel hub assembly.

Artificers start off knowing a limited number of “plans” that correspond to specific magic items they can create. This is similar to the old Infusions known mechanic, but the kinds of items you can pick from are much broader. At levels 2, 6, 10, and 14 you get a different list to choose from. Each level has specific items, but also has a broad category in it.

And it doesn’t stop there, either. The spell can be cast from the object multiple times – up to your Intelligence modifier per use of this feature. That is a ton of added flexibility to any party.

The original equipment bearings on your vehicle are engineered for specific loads. Those bigger and wider tires look cool, as do tires with lower tread walls. But they place higher loads on the wheel bearings, possibly resulting in accelerated wear. That could present a safety issue if your wheel bearings fail.

Your vehicle will signal that it’s time to replace a failed wheel bearing. For example, if you hear unusual sounds like humming or clicking, then your bearing might be bad. Watch out and listen for these signs and symptoms:

Bad wheel bearings can cause the steering wheel to vibrate. The intensity increases as the vehicle speed increases and the vehicle turns to the left or right. However, the vibration could be linked to an out-of-round tire (there could be a flat spot on the tire) or a tire that is no longer balanced. Another cause is damaged or worn suspension components.

At level 11, Artificers go back to Magic Item chicanery, however, with Spell-Storing item. This feature lets an Artificer imbue a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd-level spell into a weapon or spellcasting focus type item. Then, that spell can e cast with an Action. By anyone. So, an Artificer could give a Haste spell to a friend. But it’s even better because that spell doesn’t have to be one that you have prepared.

Of course, there’s still more. Every Artificer is also a genius, according to the rules of D&D. No, really. At 7th level, they gain a feature called Flash of Genius. Artificers are great at party support. Most vehicles today use sealed hub bearing assemblies that contain roller bearings. While we don’t address these, older cars used tapered roller bearings, which required servicing and preload adjusting to ensure the right amount of end play or axial clearance.

What else do they do, though? I’m glad you asked. In addition to making magic items, they can make mundane items – but don’t worry, that’s the level 1 feature revamped. I’m actually a huge fan.

“The good news is most of the time, a vehicle will let you know way before a failure ever happens,” said Gary Hardesty, Kelley Blue Book’s in-house service and maintenance expert and an A.S.E. certified master technician. “The key is to listen to your car. Magical Tinkering, as it’s called, lets you create any one item of adventuring gear (chosen from a list) with a single Magic Action. This is an extremely flexible ability because you can suddenly have a rope, a crowbar, or a bag of caltrops/ball bearings when you need them. Sure, they only last an hour, but what an hour.

If there is excessive play in the steering, meaning the steering seems less responsive or less precise than normal, worn bearings could be causing the problem. Also, this could be a sign the vehicle needs a wheel alignment. If you have any of the signs listed above, visit a dealer service or auto repair shop.

Imagine driving on the freeway when the left front tire and wheel suddenly break off, sending your out-of-control vehicle skidding across several lanes of 65 mph traffic. This is not an exaggeration. This is reality, and can happen if you fail to notice the signs the wheel bearings are deteriorating and need immediate repairs. Your wheel bearing might be bad if you hear unusual sounds like humming, squeaking, or clicking. Some experts say a bad wheel bearing can sound like a bird chirping. Also, if your car wobbles or pulls to one side, you will want to get it checked.

If one tire wears out faster than the others, it could be a sign that the wheel bearings are worn. However, it also could be a sign the tire is improperly inflated (too much air pressure or not enough), the tires are improperly aligned, or the vehicle has damaged or worn suspension components.

Wheel bearings are theoretically engineered to last the life of the vehicle. There is no maintenance schedule for replacing wheel bearings, and there is no constant source of lubrication. However, they can be damaged, leading to failure.

The only difference here is if you die, the magic item vanishes after 1d4 days have passed. So you can’t just play an Artificer, make a bunch of magic items, and then wander off into the woods to start a new character who now has a treasure trove of magic items.

Accompanying the new write-up is a lengthy video that takes a deep dive into what the devs were thinking (or what they weren’t thinking) when they revised the class. There are a few substantive changes, but by and large, I’d say the class still plays mostly the way it did in the older edition. If you’re familiar with Artificers, the wheel hasn’t been reinvented here the way that it was with the Monk.

And then of course, they have their spellcasting. Spellcasting is a big part of the Artificer’s kit, and they do get to tinker with their spel list a little. In the Unearthed Arcana, Artificers get an expanded spell list. They also get the ability to swap out a cantrip for another one on the Artificer list after a Long Rest, making them almost as flexible as a Wizard.

However, luxury cars are more expensive to repair. Do note that if bearings go bad at one wheel, replacing the bearings at the other wheel on the same axle is unnecessary. Hardesty cautions that if you think something is wrong, don’t wait to get it diagnosed: “The longer you wait, the more it will cost as other components may be damaged by a wheel bearing.”

Technicians can check for wheel wobble by putting the vehicle on a lift and manually checking for wheel movement. Typically, it would be impossible to shake the wheel and tire. However, if it moves, the hub assembly needs immediate attention. The tire and wheel can literally come off the vehicle at any time, at any speed, if you don’t repair your vehicle.

First things first, though, overall, the Artificer is still a half-caster in line with Paladins and Rangers. Like those classes, Artificers are spellcasters, sure. But their primary focus is doing other stuff with spellcasting as part of their kit.

Driving with bad wheel bearings impacts the safety of a vehicle, and it could cause a serious car accident. We do not advise driving on them when they fail and recommend getting them checked out as soon as possible. Bad wheel bearings can damage things like your hub, the vehicle’s constant velocity joint (CV joint), or the automatic transmission.

All along the way, Artificers are attuning to more than the usual limit of magic items, starting with 4 items (instead of 3) and working up to 6 by the time they get to level 18. And at 20th level, the Capstone feature for the whole class has been nerfed.

The anti-lock warning light may illuminate if the ring, tire, and wheel wobble, the wheel’s speed sensor is no longer operating properly, and the ABS may operate sporadically or not at all. See a professional for repair.
