In certain extreme environments, however, components made of 440C can still corrode. When superior corrosion resistance is required, we recommend grades like XD15NW® and XD16N.

As a steel with relatively high hardness, 440C is often annealed for easier machinability. Following this, 440C can be hardened and quenched to increase strength and prevent cracking. Tempering can be performed to reduce brittleness without sacrificing hardness.

440C is a high-carbon and martensitic stainless steel known for good hardness, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance. With correct heat treating, 440C can reach 58-60 HRC, and is typically used in bearings, ball screws, and other rolling contact applications as well as knife blades, medical instruments, food service applications, and valves.
