What is slew drive

IMO USA Slew Drives decreases costs by replacing complex in-house systems in machines that rotate heavy loads and require functionality and innovation. Each has an unlimited slewing angle and range, move smoothly and jolt-free, no slip-stick effect Stick-Slip Effect > Causes > Solutions (2021), and provide the most efficient transmission of high power and torque possible. Our Slew Drives are entirely enclosed and sealed housing withstands harsh environments and increases safety.

This brochure summarizes typical types of damage. It describes their probable causes and provides information on how to prevent such damage in the future. This should facilitate the search for the possible cause of damage. This information ensures the extensive and reliable functioning of our products and a corresponding long service life for engines.

Furthermore, our experts are also confronted with complex damage processes which cannot be explained in this brochure due to space limitations. However, in the event that damage occurs to our products, we will be more than willing to examine them at our facility and to write an expert damage report for you. Please contact your local sales partner or MAHLE representative.

We believe you will find this reference manual easy to read and use, and that it will be very helpful to you in properly determining the cause of premature bearing failure.

Slew drive motor

WD-L is a light series slew drive including a ball slewing bearing (one or two rows) and one or two worms acting on one worm wheel. It is the first choice in light applications like mobile equipment, forklift rotators, turntables handling equipment, boom rotating devices.

The WD-H series offers a significantly higher carrying capacity than comparable slew drives while remaining compact and unmatched in the industry.

WD-H is a heavy-duty series slew drive comprising a two-race roller bearing for higher capacity and one or two worms acting upon one wheel yielding maximum torque at the smallest size and weight. Typical applications are steering gears for heavy transportation, rock drill rigs, tilt rotators attached to excavators, and antenna drives. If space is not a limitation, a WD-L slew drive may be used which would be larger in width (diameter) and would have an increased weight compared with a WD-H worm drive of a comparable output torque and moment load capacity. However, the total height of the WD-L drive would be smaller than a WD-H unit.

As you know, every automotive engine part will eventually wear out. If every part always performed for the full length of its expected life, your job would be fairly simple – to replace parts that have worn. Unfortunately, we cannot always count on an engine part failing only because its normal lifespan is exceeded. Mechanics must not only be a “replacer of parts” but they must be capable of diagnosis to determine why a part failed prematurely. Below are two different tools available to help you identify engine bearing failures.

As a ready-for-installation system module, they replace countless individual parts. Slew drives are utilized for aerial platforms, defense technology, public transportation, forestry machine sectors,  solar trackers, and many more.

Numerous checks during and after production guarantee the highest quality of MAHLE products. If problems occur during operation, they can usually be attributed to the engine, e.g. incorrect ignition setting, mixture preparation or the electronic control unit. Operating or assembly errors as well as inadequate lubrication and fuels are some of the main breakdown causes.

Slew Drives commonly referred to as Slewing Gear, Slew Bearings, Worm Gears, or Worm Drives is a complete, ready to install system that consists of a ball or roller slewing ring bearing, drive train, and completely enclosed housing. It can be customized with hydraulic or electric motors, brakes, planetary gearboxes, corrosion protection, as well as many other options.

MAHLE Aftermarket has created a brochure explaining various engine bearing failures. The pages of this manual are organized, for your convenience, into four major subjects:
