Thrust bearingexample
Croesus is pondering whether he should launch a pre-emptive strike against Lydia’s main rival, Persia. When he learns that, if he does this, a great power will fall, he thinks that this means he will succeed in defeating the Persians and removing them as a threat. But, as we’ll soon learn, he’s wrong. He’s failed to see that the oracle is ambiguous: that is to say, that it can be read in more than one way. And so he fails to ask the follow-up question: which power does the oracle mean, when it says that a power will fall?
Thrust spherical roller bearing is a kind of separation bearing. Its load action line has a certain angle with the bearing axis. Therefore, it has a good self-aligning function and the allowable angle error is 2-3 degrees. However, the allowable angular error decreases as the load applied to the bearing increases, and it can bear both axial and radial loads. It can be used in extremely heavy load situations and can run at high speeds. In order to prevent harmful slippage of the rollers and raceways during the bearing adjustment operation, a certain minimum axial load must be applied to the bearing. Spherical roller thrust bearings require less maintenance due to their low coefficient of friction. These bearings can operate at relatively high speeds due to the cage design and the consistency between the rollers and washers.
Radial bearingexample
In short, although radial and thrust bearings are both types of bearings, there are obvious differences in design, application and characteristics.
Tapered roller thrust bearings are designed to provide large thrust capabilities and can be unidirectional or bidirectional. They can withstand medium to heavy combined radial and axial loads. Cylindrical rollers also reduce friction and heat generation. Thrust cylindrical roller bearings have a much greater increase in thrust capacity than ball thrust bearings. Thrust cylindrical bearings consist of two hardened, precision-ground caps, precision-ground rollers and cage bands that secure the rollers. The thrust plate’s inside and outside diameters are precision ground for proper installation. Cylindrical roller thrust bearings are available in metric ISO series and inch series, both series are interchangeable. Applications for cylindrical thrust roller bearings include extruders, screw presses, rock crushers, coal mills, lathe tailstocks and oil field equipment.
For, after he had sent his envoys to the oracles, he had waited for the appointed day and devised this cunning plan – something that would be impossible to discover or to imagine: he cut up a tortoise and a lamb, and then boiled them together in a bronze pot with a bronze lid on top.
You may wonder whether Croesus’ response here relates back to that first test that he set for the oracles, when he already knew the answer? This is because Croesus also reads this second oracle as confirming his own expectations and desires. Herodotus describes him as being ‘overjoyed’ at the oracle, which seems a subtle criticism of the lack of consideration he gives to its response.
Radial thrust bearing
Read Herodotus’ description of Croesus’ first consultation of the oracles. What are the different stages of the process? You will need to read the episode at least twice in order to work out what’s going on. In your answer, pick out (at least) three stages as they are revealed to us.
Radial bearing is a common bearing that mainly bears radial load from the shaft. The design of this type of bearing usually includes main components such as outer ring, inner ring, rolling elements and cage. When the rolling elements roll between the outer ring and the inner ring, friction and wear can be reduced, thereby improving the efficiency and life of the mechanical equipment. The main feature of a radial bearing is that it can only bear radial loads and cannot bear axial loads. If the equipment is required to support axial loads, other types of bearings or structural designs are often required, such as thrust bearings or angular contact bearings. The main categories of radial bearings are:
Angular contact ball thrust bearings are designed to bear radial loads and thrust loads, and their large thrust carrying capacity is the main design feature. These bearings are of the imperial series and typically have a contact angle of approximately 50 degrees. Angular contact ball thrust bearings consist of a hardened and ground angular contact plate (with dowel holes for mounting) and a brass cage with precision balls. Single-way angular thrust ball bearings handle these loads in one direction, while double-way angular thrust ball bearings handle these loads in both directions. This design is primarily used at the bottom of vertical shaft applications to withstand large thrust loads while providing center alignment to the shaft.

Thrust bearings, also called axial thrust bearings, can withstand axial loads. These loads are loads parallel to the axis in the machine. The two main components of a thrust bearing are the bearing housing and the rolling elements. The housing remains stationary and attached to the machine. The rolling elements rotate with the shaft. The rolling elements of a thrust bearing can be spherical or cylindrical (roller) shaped and made of metal or plastic. When a bearing is subjected to an axial load, the bearing distributes the load on its surface, allowing the shaft to rotate smoothly without excessive friction and wear. Since the thrust bearing is a detachable design, its maintenance method and cost are relatively simple. This means individual components can be removed and replaced. Therefore, thrust bearings can be repaired without replacing the entire bearing. Thrust bearings are used in a variety of mechanical systems, from automotive engines to industrial equipment, aerospace and other systems. Required for many high speed, high load applications with axial loads.

Herodotus begins his account of Croesus by recording a visit to his palace at Sardis by the Athenian, Solon (1.29). Both a poet and a leading figure in the political affairs of Athens, Solon was known for his wisdom. Later Athenians attributed to him the founding principles of their democracy. After showing him around his treasury, Croesus eagerly asks Solon, of all the people he knows ‘who is the happiest of them all?’ (1.30.2). Croesus asks this question fully expecting Solon to name him: how could someone so wealthy not be the happiest person alive? When Solon not only doesn’t name him but instead urges him to ‘look to the end’ in all things, Croesus sends him away ‘considering him to be a nobody’ (1.33.1, using that same phrase as in 1.13.2: poieō logon oudena). Soon after, wary of a growing power to the east of his kingdom (Persia), Croesus ponders whether to launch a pre-emptive strike. To help him decide, he tests various oracles by setting them a puzzle.

If Herodotus is implying subtle criticism of Croesus, however, it is because of what he does – or, in this case, doesn’t do, since he doesn’t ask the follow up question – and not because of who he is. That is to say, there is no indication that Croesus gets things wrong because he’s one of those foreigners (barbaroi). On the contrary, Herodotus is at pains to show the high regard in which Croesus holds Delphi – a Greek community – and the mutual respect between them. The Delphians even make him a citizen owing to his generosity in showering them with gifts – a story that Herodotus backs with his own eye-witness account of those dedications (1.51.1–5). There’s nothing inherently bad about Croesus.
The fit between the shaft ring and the shaft of the thrust bearing is generally a transition fit, and the fit between the seat ring and the bearing seat hole is generally a clearance fit. Therefore, this kind of bearing is easier to install. The center shaft ring of the two-way thrust bearing should be fixed on the shaft to prevent rotation relative to the axis. When installing a thrust bearing, the verticality of the shaft ring and the shaft centerline should be checked. The method is to fix the dial indicator on the end face of the box shell, so that the contact head of the dial is on the raceway of the bearing shaft ring while rotating the bearing, while observing the dial indicator pointer. If the pointer is deflected, it means that the shaft ring and the center line of the shaft are not perpendicular. When the hole in the box shell is deep, an extended dial indicator can also be used for inspection. When a thrust bearing is installed correctly, its seat ring can automatically adapt to the rolling of the rolling elements to ensure that the rolling elements are located in the upper and lower raceways. If installed upside down, not only will the bearing not work properly, but also the mating surfaces will be severely worn. Since the difference between the shaft ring and the seat ring is not very obvious, extra care should be taken during assembly to avoid making mistakes. In addition, a gap of 0.2-0.5mm should be left between the thrust bearing seat ring and the bearing seat hole to compensate for errors caused by inaccurate parts processing and installation. When the center of the bearing ring deviates during operation, this gap will This ensures that it adjusts automatically to avoid contact and friction, allowing it to operate normally. Otherwise, severe damage to the bearing will occur.
Thrust roller bearings are bearings with rollers as rolling elements. According to the shape of the rollers, thrust roller bearings can be divided into thrust cylindrical bearings, thrust tapered bearings and thrust needle roller bearings. Thrust needle roller bearings use slender needle rollers, thrust cylindrical bearings use cylindrical rollers, and thrust tapered bearings use conical rollers. Thrust roller bearings are used to bear combined shaft and radial loads where axial load is the main component, but the radial load shall not exceed 55% of the axial load.

The photo depicts an almost intact temple, which is bricked all around with the exception of its open front where stand two columns. The simple building is capped by a triangular pediment. It stands on the side of a hill, which rises quite dramatically behind it. In the background stand a number of tall cypress trees.
Thrust ball bearings made of ceramic materials have good hardness and high temperature resistance and are suitable for high-speed and efficient mechanical equipment. In addition, because ceramic materials have good wear resistance and fatigue strength, thrust ball bearings can maintain a long service life when used under high load, long-term, and continuous operation conditions.

Single Direction Thrust Ball Bearing consists of a shaft ring, a bearing race, and a ball and cage thrust assembly. The bearings are of separable construction, so installation is simple because the washers and ball and cage assemblies can be installed separately. There are two types of small one-way thrust ball bearings, with flat seats or with self-aligning seats. Bearings with self-aligning seat washers can be used with self-aligning seat washers to compensate for angular misalignment between the support surface in the housing and the shaft.

Thrust tapered roller bearings can form a very compact bearing arrangement in the axial direction. This kind of bearing can withstand heavy axial loads, is not sensitive to impact loads, and has good rigidity.
The maintenance and upkeep of radial bearings is relatively simple, while the maintenance and upkeep of thrust bearings requires complex processes and technical support.
Note: Remember that the Pythia, as referred to in this text, is another name for the priestess at Delphi who conveyed oracular messages to enquirers.
Thrust ball bearings and thrust roller bearings overlap in their application suitability. Therefore, determining which bearing is best for an application can be complex. To help machinists choose a better thrust bearing, Aubearing explains the different types of thrust bearings, descriptions and general use cases.
As you read the following description, consider the following questions and write a sentence or two in your own words to answer each:
Double Direction Thrust Ball Bearing consists of three parts: a shaft ring, two seat rings and two steel ball-cage assemblies. The bearing is separate and each part can be installed independently. The weighing shaft ring matched with the shaft can bear the axial load in two directions and can fix the machine shaft in both directions. Such bearings must not bear any delivery radial loads. Thrust ball bearings also have a structure with a seat cushion. Since the mounting surface of the seat cushion is spherical, the bearing has self-aligning performance and can reduce the impact of installation errors.
What the other oracles prophesied is not said, but at Delphi, as soon as the Lydians had entered the hall to consult the god and ask what they had been instructed, the Pythia spoke these words in hexameter verses:
Did you notice that this oracular consultation isn’t really an enquiry into what will happen? Croesus asks the oracles to determine, when the appointed time arrives (‘the hundredth day’), what he’s doing at that very moment. This oracle isn’t about what was going to happen but what was actually happening. In fact, the person making the enquiry knows the answer already. This is a clear case of someone reading into the oracle’s intelligence report what they already have in mind.
When he sent to test the oracles, he gave the Lydians these instructions: they were to keep track of the time from the day they left Sardis, and on the hundredth day enquire of the oracles what Croesus, king of the Lydians, was doing. Then they were to write down whatever divine utterance each oracle made and bring it to him.
Thrust ball bearings are made of materials including chromium steel, stainless steel, ceramics, etc. Each material has its own characteristics and scope of application. When actually selecting materials, you need to make comprehensive considerations based on specific needs and choose materials that suit you.
After they had written down the Pythia’s divine utterance, the Lydians went back to Sardis. When those who had been sent to other places came bringing their oracles, Croesus unfolded each and read what had been written. In what they had to say nothing pleased him. But, when he heard the oracle from Delphi, immediately he proclaimed it and accepted it, considering the only place of divination to be the one in Delphi, because it had discovered what he had been doing.
The map shows the eastern part of the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. Four locations are marked: on the Greek mainland are — from top to bottom — Delphi, Athens, and Sparta (or Lacedaemon); in Anatolia is Sardis. Far off to the east is the region of Persia.
Type T tapered roller thrust bearings are designed with a cage and roller assembly and two identical thrust plates. The rollers have a common apex that allows for true rolling motion within the thrust plate. The tapered roller thrust bearing design also allows the use of rollers and therefore higher load carrying capacity. In this type of full complement bearing, adding rollers provides greater thrust capability. The added rollers increase friction within the bearing, making it suitable for low-speed applications. Our tapered roller thrust bearings are ideal for applications where high thrust loads and heavy shock loads may be encountered, such as crane hooks. Other vertical shaft applications include rock crushers and pulverized coal equipment.
Chromium steel is an alloy steel containing chromium and has good toughness and wear resistance, so it is often used to manufacture thrust bearings. Chromium steel thrust bearings have the characteristics of large load-bearing capacity and long service life, and are suitable for working in high-speed rotation and high-temperature environments. Common chromium steels include AISI 52100 steel, AISI 8620 steel, etc.
When they arrived at Delphi, the Lydians dedicated offerings before consulting the oracle in the following manner: ‘Croesus, king of Lydia and other nations, considers you the only place of divination among mortals, and gives you gifts worthy of your discoveries. Now he asks you whether he should send an army against the Persians, and whether he should take allies.’ This is what they enquired about. The judgement given to Croesus proclaimed that, if he sent an army against the Persians he would destroy a great empire; and that he should discover the most powerful of the Greeks and make them his friends.

A richly painted scene. A woman sits on a stool, like that depicted in the Attic red-figure kylix (Figure 22), head forward and eyes looking up, as if in a trance. She has thick black hair that runs down her back, and wears a white robe, a band of golden necklaces, and an embroidered scarf. Around her are four elderly, bearded men, all dressed in simple white robes with a white band around their heads. One, in profile, looks intently at her; another — whom the viewer sees from behind — holds his arms out straight in front of him; a third stands behind her, looking up; the fourth holds a scroll in his left hand and a writing instrument in his right. All five figures are in a special sanctuary, set off from the immediate foreground of the painting. A dark red wall provides the background to the sanctuary; there is also a laurel tree (and many laurel leaves strewn all over the floor), while high up on the wall on the right are hung various votive objects. Before them, and in front of the sanctuary, two figures kneel, with their heads bent and right arms raised. There appear to be twirls of smoke coming from somewhere.
In the next activity you will reflect on the potential ramifications of this way of reading the oracles by examining Croesus’s next move. Having discovered the truth of the oracle at Delphi, Croesus sends his Lydian messengers back to it to so that he can determine what to do about that growing power of Persia.

Double-acting tapered roller thrust bearings VVFT are designed to handle thrust loads in either direction. The use of two tapered V-plates, a flat center plate and two tapered roller assemblies enables the bearing to handle the high thrust loads inherent to rolled steel bars and the structural shape. In this application, thrust bearings are complemented by four-row cylindrical roller bearings AD-D to handle radial loads or roller separation forces.

Croesus sent out messengers to test the oracles for what they knew. He did this so that, should he discover that they knew the truth, he might then enquire of them again to find out whether he should launch a military expedition against the Persians.
A detailed crowd scene. In the centre foreground stands a regal figure, wearing a rich red robe, a golden scarf around his waist, an ermine cloak that flows to the floor, knee-high ivory-coloured boots, and a gold-coloured hat with a dark-green plume. He poses with his right arm on his waist; in his left hand, he holds a golden rod that points towards a mass of treasures — wine jars of all shapes and sizes, jewellery, gold bowls — spilling over carefully laid tables on to the floor, such is their number. Next to him stands a man, much more simply dressed in a dark green robe and walking boots, who appears to be animated conversation with him. To the left of the central figure stands a woman, as regally dressed as he is, with a golden red dress that billows out, and a royal blue bejewelled top that opens at the waist; she too wears an elaborate plumed hat. Milling around them are an array of finely drawn characters, around twenty in number. Behind them is a wall with a large landscape painting at its centre, and further off to the left (as the viewer sees it) is an outdoor scene with a temple-like building and trees.
Journalbearing
Radial bearings usually adopt a rolling element and cage structure, while thrust bearings usually adopt a journal and bush structure.
In bearing design, radial and thrust bearings are two common types. Although they are both bearings, they have clear differences in design, application and characteristics. Let’s judge the design features and differences between radial bearings and thrust bearings based on the structure of the bearing product.
Thrust ball bearings are designed to carry thrust loads in one direction and are divided into ISO metric and inch series. Thrust ball bearings are separate bearings, including a shaft ring (matched with the journal), a seat ring (matched with the bearing seat), a set of steel balls and a cage. During installation, it can be easily matched with the journal and bearing seat respectively. In some low-speed applications, a complete set of balls without a cage is used to increase thrust capability. Ball thrust bearings are a good choice when lighter thrust load applications are encountered. Thrust ball bearings are dimensionally interchangeable with other bearing manufacturers and, in the case of the ISO series, they are dimensionally interchangeable through the base series part number. When applications require greater accuracy, thrust ball bearings can be manufactured to P5 accuracy. Thrust ball bearings include one-way thrust ball bearings, two-way thrust ball bearings, and angular contact thrust ball bearings according to different structures.
When the divine answer had been brought back and Croesus learned of it, he was overjoyed with the oracle. Since he was in no doubt that he would destroy the kingdom of Cyrus [king of the Persians], he sent once again to the Pythia and gave to the Delphians, whose number he had learned, two gold coins for each man. The Delphians in return gave Croesus and all Lydians the right to consult the oracle first, free of charge, the front seats at festivals, and, to whoever wanted it, the right of Delphian citizenship for all time.

Stainless steel is an alloy material with good corrosion resistance and is widely used in thrust bearing manufacturing. Thrust bearings made of stainless steel have good intrinsic quality and service life, and can adapt to complex working environments, such as high temperature, low temperature, strong corrosion, etc. Commonly used stainless steel materials include AISI 304, AISI 316, etc.
Thrust bearings are used to support thrust loads or axial loads applied to a shaft. Thrust bearings are divided into several categories based on rolling elements: balls, cylindrical rollers, Single Direction and Double Direction thrust bearings that can withstand axial load and radial load. Thrust bearings are available in a variety of design types and configurations to suit a variety of load capacities and applications. Ball thrust bearing series are available in inch, ISO metric and angular contact series. Single Direction inch and metric series thrust bearings are capable of handling relatively light loads in one direction, while angular contact series thrust bearings can handle a combination of radial and thrust loads in one or both directions. Cylindrical roller thrust bearing series include inch, metric, and self-aligning series, with one-way and two-way series respectively. The use of cylindrical roller designs provides greater thrust load capacity than ball thrust bearings of the same size. This greater capacity makes thrust bearings suitable for a wide range of applications and industries. Aubearing’s tapered roller thrust bearings have high load capacity and are suitable for many applications that require heavy thrust loads. This article describes the various types of thrust bearings, their basic designs, and their general applications.

Thrust bearings are generally composed of two thrust washers or thrust washers and several rolling elements. Generally, thrust washers are divided into shaft pieces and seat pieces. The most common types of rolling elements are generally made of iron or copper. The cage is combined into a whole. The most common type of bearing is a steel ball thrust bearing.
Still, the episode shows the importance of being open-minded to information and Croesus’ position as an all-powerful monarch doesn’t help, since there’s no one to contest his interpretation. Our second example explores the importance of reading closely more fully.

The needle rollers of thrust needle roller bearings have a small diameter and are shaped like needles. Thrust needle roller bearings consist of an outer ring, an inner ring, a flange inserted into the contour and small diameter needle rollers. Small-diameter needle rollers can disperse axial loads while having high stiffness and load-bearing capacity. Thrust needle roller bearings are suitable for applications where space is limited. Thrust needle roller bearings are suitable for high-speed axial load requirements and can be used in CNC machine tool spindles, instruments, motors and other equipment. The disadvantage is that the number of needle rollers is small, which can easily lead to excessive rolling element clearance and short service life.
Radial bearings are suitable for high-speed operation and high-precision requirements, while thrust bearings are suitable for heavy loads and shocks.
There is no cage in the full complement thrust ball bearing. This allows balls to be placed between the raceways. Therefore, full complement thrust ball bearings can withstand higher axial loads, but the maximum speed is lower and the friction between the balls creates greater rotational torque. Full complement ball bearings are mainly used in heavy-duty applications since they can withstand high axial loads. For example, large cranes, heavy equipment, ship steering equipment, aircraft landing equipment, etc.
