A first step is to check the condition of the CV boot that covers the internal joint. If there’s grease leaking out of a crack in the boot or one of the boot clamps is loose or missing, it’s a concern. You’ll need a new boot at least, but the CV joint needs to be inspected. If there’s dirt inside already, it’s likely a new axle is necessary.

Be sure to consult your owner’s manual, a repair guide, an AutoZoner at a store near you, or a licensed, professional mechanic for vehicle-specific repair information. Refer to the service manual for specific diagnostic, repair and tool information for your particular vehicle. Always chock your wheels prior to lifting a vehicle. Always disconnect the negative battery cable before servicing an electrical application on the vehicle to protect its electrical circuits in the event that a wire is accidentally pierced or grounded. Use caution when working with automotive batteries. Sulfuric acid is caustic and can burn clothing and skin or cause blindness. Always wear gloves and safety glasses and other personal protection equipment, and work in a well-ventilated area. Should electrolyte get on your body or clothing, neutralize it immediately with a solution of baking soda and water. Do not wear ties or loose clothing when working on your vehicle.

But CV axles aren’t always going to last a vehicle’s lifespan. When they fail, it can put you out of business until it’s fixed, so early detection is key. Here’s how to tell if your CV axle is bad, ways to check them, and what could happen if it isn’t fixed.

Replacing a CV boot and repacking it with grease can be successful repair for CV axle problems, but it’s not always guaranteed if there’s damage to the joint. If left unchecked, a failing CV axle can lead to further damage to the drivetrain, suspension, or tires. In severe cases, a broken CV axle can cause the vehicle to lose control or stop moving entirely, which can be dangerous, especially at high speeds.

Unfilled PTFE provides, in most cases, a lower coefficient of friction than a filled PTFE material and the lowest degree of wear of the seal counterface. However, a sealing lip made of an unfilled PTFE material has limited resistance to wear and deformation under load.

However, the challenge is that the drive wheels also need to steer as well as travel vertically with the suspension. A solid axle wouldn’t allow for this motion, thus the need for the CV axle. There’s a joint encased in a rubber boot filled with grease that allows for these movements. It contains high-strength steel ball bearings that sit within grooves in the joint housing and a metal cage that holds the ball bearings in place.

The engine transfers power to the transmission, and the transmission sends it to the drive wheels. For front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive vehicles, CV axles, or constant velocity axles, are used to transmit torque to the drive wheels to move the car forward or backward. It contains a splined axle shaft that enters the transmission on one end and an outer joint that connects the axle to the wheel hub.
