i have had the priviledge on working on several speakers from designing the whole enchilada to just designing the horn. my first puppies on the pro side: the kp-450, kp-650 series and on the consumer side: the quartet, forte II were my first shots at home speakers. of course, all were done under the mentoring eye of PWK. the epics were definitely a departure from the forte and quartet. some say, too much and too quick a departure. i was probably the most proud of the epic because of what they represented in technology back then. in a tight time frame, an awesome tech, input from several other engineers and myself, designed neo woofers, neo compression drivers, horns and other things from the ground up. even the cone material was a special formulation for us. some ask, what were we aiming for: a sound signature that was bascially the sound of an audiophile type speaker with the efficiency and sensitivity of a klipsch. i think we got there and then later, not.

Thanks for the iformation. I just spoke to the seller on the phone. Very nice guy who is having to down size which pains him greatly! He pulled the drivers which have green backs, probably not old Celestions LOL. I'm sure they are neodymiums and they have a date of August, 1996. Most certainly a version 3. Looks like he may have them sold for more than I was going to offer him. He's going to contact me if that deal falls through.

I would describe the Epic series (CF) as being the most "audiophile" sounding. Definetly not the signature klipsch sound, but a more laid back smoother round sound. In fact, I think the Epic series were Roy's first babies?

If they're any decent price at all I'd get them. Even though the grille bezels are a little cheesy and tend to chip badly. You could always build new grilles.

Well they only made them a couple of years. I bought my CF-2's in 96 I believe, and I thought the KLF's replaced them in 97. I would guess these were the 474th and 475th made in 1997.

It seems to me I remember someone saying there were three versions of the CF-4's and 3's. The last version had a higher box tuning, lighter cone woofers with ceramic magnets. I also worry about the availability of aluminum diaphragms in the compression drivers.

Tuning, different port lenghts, and version 3 went to a lighter cone, like the Legends have. Hey Colterphoto1, you had some version 2 CF-3's there for awhile didn't you?

You are correct about the different tunings, I think it was mainly different length port tubes. Maybe search through some old posts. I don't know about different drivers. I thought they were all neos. They do sound GREAT. I'm telling ya, I had a pair here for several months. Doc and I compared them favorably with his ChorusII and my Cornies. Then consider that they are DUAL woofer so less distortion, and only 2-way so very smooth.

The first thing I asked the seller was the depth of the ports. Had they been 6", the CF-3's would be in my living room right now! Alas, they were 2.5" deep. The owner is going to let me know if he doesn't sell them. I still think I'm going to stick with the Chorus II's in any case.

That being said- I had a pair of those here for a while and both Doc and I thought they totally rocked for both music and HT. That horn is amazing and the porting is bang on.

Being you are an FLA guy, you might be interested to know the seller bought them new at Sound Advise in Jacksonville while he was in the service. I like the idea about maybe being manufatured in 95. They might be the second version with the neo-magnets? Do you know how to tell the difference between the neo's and the ceramic magnets?

I thought that also but, he says he purchased them in Dec. 1996 which is confirmed by the original receipt which he still has.
