Drivingwith badwheel bearing
“With the first Marble Machine I just started to build… I ended up building the same things 10 times because I didn’t do any prototypes.” – Martin Molin (Source: YouTube)
Wheel hub replacement: A faulty wheel bearing can lead to wheel hub replacement because the bearing is an integral part of the wheel hub assembly. When a wheel bearing fails, it can cause damage to the hub itself due to the increased friction, heat, and stress.
The wheel bearing is vital for your vehicleâs stability, ensuring the suspension and wheel rotation work together to absorb impact during the ride.
How long can you drive onabadwheel bearing
I love a good prototyping story. Prototyping allows Molin to experiment and prove ideas work before committing them to his design. He can hone his idea cheaply with the raw materials before bringing his idea over to CAD. Unless I’m misinterpreting, design comes after prototyping. And then in the design phase, he focuses on getting things right. Taking time to consider the whole picture.
I think the prototyping helps Molin understand the medium of plywood as well. One neat technique he’s unlocked is milling down a few millimeters to the darker glue layer of the plywood. This gives some pieces depth with a two-tone look and feel that can be created cheaply without introducing too much work or another process like painting or staining.
Key function: The bearingâs main function is to make the wheel rotate and support the vehicleâs weight with minimal friction. It mainly provides stability, and wheel alignment, and improves handling and control of the vehicle.
Driving on a bad wheel bearing is risky and not advisable. A failing wheel bearing can cause severe handling problems, such as wheel wobble, steering instability, and uneven tire wear, all of which compromise safety. Additionally, a bad wheel bearing can lead to further damage to the wheel hub, suspension, or brake components, potentially resulting in more expensive repairs and increasing the risk of a dangerous situation on the road.
Wheel bearingreplacement cost
A faulty wheel bearingâs main signs are a squealing noise and vibrations while driving. The wheel bearing sits in the central part of the wheel, known as the hub assembly. The bearing connects the wheel to the suspension, allowing it to spin and rotate smoothly. But, if the wheel bearing is loose or faulty, the ride becomes shaky and the wheel makes humming or squealing noises.
The Wintergatan Marble Machine has a special place in my family’s heart. For over a year my son would come into my office every day and ask me to “watch musical instrument”, which was his way of asking to see the Marble Machine. Even now when I fire up the video my son will come racing from across the house to watch this machine birth its magic.

Suspension repair: A faulty wheel bearing can lead to suspension replacement because it disrupts the stability and alignment of the wheel, placing additional stress on suspension components like the struts, shocks, and control arms. As the wheel wobbles or misaligns due to a damaged bearing, these suspension parts are forced to compensate, leading to uneven wear and strain.
Bad wheel bearings make the car lose stability, smoothness, and control, especially the front wheel bearings. Consequently, the wheel assembly becomes wobbly, making the car shaky. The vibration can even travel all the way to the steering wheel.
Founding member of Wintergatan and the pilot of the Marble Machine, Martin Molin, is now documenting the process of building the next version of the Marble Machine, on the Wintergatan YouTube channel. This version of the Marble Machine has the ambitious goal of going on tour and performing more than one song in a single show. “Whereas the original Marble Machine was a viral success, it was a mechanical failure,” says Molin. To achieve that goal, the new Marble Machine must be more modular and efficient in its design.
A wheel bearing can bend, crack, damage, become sticky, rust, or many other issues. If the bearing is faulty, the vehicle will show symptoms.
I love the sentiment of slowing down. Avoid the temptation to start the real-world building and spend time getting the details right in design will ultimately speed up the building process.

Safety: Worn-out bearings are a major safety issue for any vehicle. A faulty or loose bearing can make your vehicleâs wheels wobble, make noise, degrade faster, or even lock up. If the wheel bearingâs condition is critical, the vehicle has little to no stability.
Brake pad replacement: A faulty wheel bearing can lead to brake pad replacement because it can cause the wheel to wobble or become misaligned, which puts uneven pressure on the brake pads. This misalignment can cause the brake pads to wear unevenly or more quickly than usual, as they may constantly rub against the brake rotor, even when the brakes arenât applied.
Another neat inspiration I’ve picked up from Molin is how he sets up his workshop. He spends time knolling objects on his table and mise en place-style preparation for the day’s work. My physical and digital desktops are disgusting. I can only imagine how much more relaxing work would be if I spent the first 30 minutes each day cleaning up and preparing my workspace for the day.
“A big part of our monkey brain wants immediate reward at all times. I’m now trying to keep that part of my monkey brain at bay by not doing the more instantly rewarding, real-world building, and focusing on really getting the CAD drawings down and perfect. I’m sure this approach is more efficient and will speed up the whole building process.” – Martin Molin (Source: YouTube)
The foundation of CNC milling and 3D printing for production is also a very smart choice for this project. If parts break while on tour, as long as Molin has a thumb-drive with 3D files on it, they can be replaced in minutes at any makerspace.
How to knowif wheel bearingis bad
Wheel bearings keep your vehicleâs wheels stabilized and properly connected to the suspension system. The bearing also helps your wheels support the vehicleâs weight while spinning smoothly.
Frontwheel bearingnoise symptoms
When a wheel bearing fails, several serious issues can occur. Initially, you may notice a grinding or humming noise that gets louder as you drive faster. The steering wheel might start to vibrate, especially when turning, and the vehicle could feel less stable or pull to one side. As the bearing deteriorates, the wheel may begin to wobble or become loose, which can compromise your ability to control the vehicle. In extreme cases, the wheel could even lock up or detach from the car, leading to a potential accident.
The wheel bearing keeps the wheels, suspension, and brakes tightly stabilized together. Therefore, if the bearing loosens up or becomes faulty, these systems can lose stability and start moving and banging erratically.
I don’t know if Martin Molin will ever read this, but I want to say thank you on behalf of myself because I’ve gotten great joy out of watching your prototyping process; and on behalf of my family to whom you’ve brought hours of joy through music.
How to tell whichwheel bearingis badwhile driving
Tire replacement: If the wheel bearing was causing wheel lock-ups or misalignment, the tires are possibly unevenly worn. Replacing the tires can be necessary.
For those who aren’t familiar, the Wintergatan Marble Machine is an enormous mechanical device filled with over 2000 marbles raised up by a conveyor belt and dropped on a xylophone, drum contact mics, and bass guitar. It’s raw, creaky, clumsy, and beautiful.
Unstable components around the wheels while the car is driving commonly lead to humming and squealing noises. This can happen both for the front and rear wheel bearings.
Once a wheel bearing starts making noise, its lifespan can vary, but it generally wonât last much longer. The noise is a sign that the bearing is already significantly worn or damaged, and continuing to drive with it can lead to rapid deterioration. In some cases, it might last a few hundred miles, while in others, it could fail within a few days or even sooner, depending on the severity of the damage and driving conditions.
This time around Molin is taking a different approach to building the machine. It focuses a lot around CNC milling and 3D printing parts and (if you read my blog, you might have guessed) prototyping. Lots of prototyping.
