He is survived by his wife Jennie, daughter Shawn Whiting and a granddaughter, all of Winslow; brother Tom Erwin of Jasper; and extended family and friends.

He was born Nov. 19, 1939, to Ray and Norma (Barnett) Erwin in Winslow. He was adopted by Roy and Opal (Dedman) Erwin after the death of his biological mother.

He married Jennie Brewster June 17, 1966, at Winslow General Baptist Church. He graduated from Winslow High School in 1958, earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Oakland City University and master’s degree from Indiana University. He taught at Laurel High School in Laurel, Winslow High School and Pike Central High School.
