Oak wilt disease continues to have ravage and kill trees in the West Michigan. The disease can have devastating effects on not only the oak trees, but also the visual identity of the city and its property values. As a fungal disease it is spread by contact both above and below ground. Above the ground, beetles spread oak wilt by eating the sap of an infected tree and then eating sap from a damaged tree. Below the ground, neighboring oak tree roots graft together enabling the disease to spread through the root system.

Oak wilt is a containable disease, several alternatives exist to prevent the spread and confine this terrible sickness to limited areas. During the warmer months of the year (April thru September), tree pruning is strongly discouraged; beetles are attracted to the scent of the weeping sap. If pruning is a must or the wind has broken a tree limb, use a pruning sealer to cover the wound and prevent the leaking of sap. To prevent the spread of Oak wilt underground, trench around the infected region of trees; this will contain the spread by severing possible root graft connections.
