I feel that timing chains should last a very long time, longer than other engine components at least. It's a metal chain shielded from the elements and constantly lubricated.

Most engines these days have timing chains as opposed to timing belts. People seem to not like timing chains since they aren't meant to be serviced for the lifetime of the engine.
