Didn't Oliver run a 3208 in their bigger tractors, 2255? And than White used them in their 4-***? Tractors, someone might be looking for one for these old girls?

Setting of these instruments requires a plain ring gage that is often—but not always— provided by the maker as standard. Calibration of them requires two or more rings to span the range of each instrument to ensure it is providing accurate readings over that range.

Their axis of measurement is the same as the micrometer head incorporated in them which is a golden feature for accurate measurement. The precision of this advantage is reduced however, due to the manipulation required to produce repeatable readings and the use of interchangeable anvils and/or spacers that enable them to cover very large capacities.

My Dad had a 2255 with the 3208. Bought it new, and it broke the crankshaft at 400 hours. He traded it for a 1466, which had to be overhauled after the first year due to electrolysis. It was an early one without a water filter. It had one after the overhaul. He ran it as his big tractor until 1982 when he traded it for a 5288. I spent many hours sitting on the floor in the left front corner of that red cab disking with him.

part it out, don't just scrap it. Someone will be able to use the heads, and fuel system. As much as it seems most are now retired, there are still a few out there running. While compared to a 3406, the 3208 is not really a small engine, at 636 cid. The turbo engines were greatly improved over the old 40S, and 32Y natural aspirated engines.

IF the right guy came along you probably have $500 worth of parts there. Problem is most 3208s have long since been retired and scrapped. You could pull it apart, save what's good and toss them on ebay, but don't be surprised if you have to sit on them for a yr. All depends on how valuable you consider your time.

Three-contact diameter measurements are able to detect significant bore roundness variations that remain immeasurable by two-point systems. This can lead to arguments over ‘size’ between the two methods.

A couple years ago we did an engine swap for a customer. He had a hole in the block, but ran nice until then. He said he wanted the old engine but never came to get it and has since sold the tractor and retired. Is there anything worth saving on it? Anyone interested in the pump maybe? It is going to the junk soon I am sick of storing it, besides it is not IH. So any value or no is my question?

Massey used them too in their 4 wheel drives.  They used the 3150/3160 in the 1500/1800 and switched to the 3208 later on in the 1505/1805.  We had a 1800 for 7 years.  Bought it new and traded a JD 5020 for it.  They were about a 210 hp tractor but we treated ours like a 300 hp tractor.  The engine never let go on us.  When we went to trade it, the salesman thought for sure the clutch was shot or at very least was going to need replacement when he saw the plow behind the tractor.  We traded it for a Versatile 950.  The 1800 was bought by a neighbor and I think it gave him good service too.  On the other hand, a different neighbor bought a 1800 new and lost the engine twice before getting to the field the first time.  He traded it off that fall for a Versatile 700 which was a much better tractor.

Dad also had a TR85 combine with a 3208, don't remember any complaints on that one. Anybody know what the 3208 in that TR85 would have been set at for horsepower?  I remember when he traded it for the TR86 with a 477 Ford he commented that it had a little more power but drank quite a bit more fuel than the 3208.

Of course there’s an upside to those interchangeable bits and pieces when it comes to calibration of the instrument. The bits and pieces can be calibrated more easily than a large capacity but limited range instrument of similar design.

Guy that was General Mgr of the biggest machine shop I delt with at my last job and I got discussing medium duty truck engines one day.  Their company truck had a 3208 in it, but little truck, F-600 I think, maybe an F-700.  He said the later 3208'S were much better than their reputation, which their's was.  Our FL-70 Freight-shaker had a Series 40 Detroit?  4 cylinder 60 series.  Shook itself and the truck apart, leaked like a 2-stroke Detroit.  The next truck was a 4300 Binder with DT466E.  Had air ride suspension and seat, alloy wheels, AC and CD player.  It was trouble-free for 4 yrs and 175,000 miles, length of the lease.  Looked about as nice when we turned it in as the day we got it.  The Freight Shaker looked ten years old after only 4 yrs,  broke down several times.  Only time it got close to 10,000# on it all the leaves in left rear spring pack broke, Dropped box on the tires.  Driver barely got it off the road.

These contacts or anvils contact the bore along the short length of the anvils. The anvils are precisely fitted into the instrument body and are spring loaded against the conical end of a pin that causes it to move in relation to a change in diameter and show that change on the indicator or micrometer head fitted to the instrument. Despite the mechanics involved, these instruments are available for small diameters and can have a measuring range up to one inch or 25mm. The anvil configuration and shape means the instrument will self-center and does not need to be rocked in the bore to ‘find’ its diameter. This enables lower skilled users to obtain better results than other devices requiring skilled manipulation of the instrument to get viable readings.

Very true, a 3208 set between 100 to 150 hp, even up to 200 will run forever. Unfortunately, Cat sold them at 250 - 275 in trucks and all the way up to 435 in marine applications. There was no reserve torque, they had to be running flat out to get the power. And when you push a small engine that hard something is eventually going to give.

In use, they have to be adjusted while being carefully positioned in two planes to ensure they are contacting the bore diameter correctly. An indicator is included in some designs to make this centering/centralizing function easier. Obviously this means measurements using them require a skilled person with adequate time to do the job.

I had a TR85 too before my current one, a TR86. It was a gear drive, no hydro. Never had a hydro until the 86. I think they rated them at 175 HP. The 95 had a turbo and I think they were 225 HP.

Inside micrometers require setting and some makers offer jigs for this purpose that employ gage blocks. But, as is mentioned endlessly, it’s hard to beat a setting to get it right.

The benefits of these instruments create some problems however. Their anvil length means they are contacting the bore wall on a line compared to other types that have point contact. They are most accurate when the full length of the anvils is contacting a bore, making diameter measurements at the mouth of a bore a bit iffy at times.

Trouble with trying to sell 3208 stuff in the Canadian prairies is, there are dozens of low-hour engines on TR combines that go for a hundred bucks at auctions.

The tubular versions have reduced weight for ease of handling when dealing with larger measurements. All things considered, these micrometers offer a lot of capacity for their cost compared to others.

These instruments are also known as ‘stick’ or ‘tubular’ micrometers as their overall appearance looks like a stick or rod—a mechanical, expensive one, that is. They are unique in that they usually have a one inch or 25mm range and very large capacity. Some use precise spacers or interchangeable rods to cover their capacity.

Heads should fit a 3204 which was used in D3 dozers and even in early 943/953.  Still not sure it's worth keeping around long.  Throw it on CL and if no response make it go away.  Either way makes a dollar and cleans up around the pondarosa.

There was a question on another forum I saw the other day.  Guy bought an F-700 with a Detroit 8.2L Fuel Pincher.  Tossed a rod thru the block on 50 mile drive home.  Was wondering if a 3208 would bolt up.  General consensus was Yes, but Everybody agreed a 5.9 or 6.7 Cummins made more sense.

A New Holland combine engine is what the guy brought me to replace his. He said he had to give $2000 to get it. I guess maybe we will not send it to the scrap yard yet then. Thanks Y'all.

There are other advantages available with this type of instrument. One is the length of the contact anvils that enable measurements of bores in thin parts or sheet metal to be measured. The contacts of other devices would normally pop out of such bores when those instruments are rocked to find size. Another advantage lies in their measuring range that is particularly useful in bores having short lands of differing diameters. Some makers offer simple modifications to the anvils enabling them to measure groove diameters inside other bores.

The instruments I’ve commented on up to this point have a single common feature: they measure a bore across a diameter or between two points 180° apart. In this section I discuss those instruments that have three measuring contacts spread 120° apart that contact the bore.
