Lots of talk here on hypotheticals, so ill add my experience. I purchased one of these about 2 months ago. over 1600 miles and 5 states later, I can say that I disagree with the suspension performance claims as I find it to be quite comfortable. I am 6’3″ 245 lbs. this machine pulls well with a very strong mid-range as well as a hard pull at higher rpm right out through the limiter. 100mph plus is easily attained. I use this to commute roughly 80mph , 120miles a day. love it so far. I have the X model. spoke wheels crash bars and pannier boxes. tones of space and I was $9,300 out the door brand new. you would be hard pressed to find a machine for a cheaper price point.. I looked and generally this fell 3 to 5k less than anything worth looking at.. My complaints are limited to windshield size/ shape. it tends to dump air in your lap rather than deflect over me. the fuel gauge is odd. most capacity is in the first half tank. motor is slightly lumpy at lo rpm but the performance in the rest of the usable range is great. the lumpy low gives a great aggressive idle and sound. would love to see more features but who doesn’t… its a sub 10k bike out the door! Zero regrets. For FYI I own or have owned a wide variety of machines including . Harley sportster 1200c Buell XB12 Buell 1125cr Suzuki Katana 600 Bandit 400 Kawasaki Mean Streak 1500 DRZ 400 QJ SRV500 ssr250S .

Older V8 and V6 engines (with almost no exceptions) have a single camshaft in the engine block just above the crankshaft. The crankshaft drives the camshaft via gears and a chain.

Throttle response is smooth and linear up to the actual rev limit at 9,300 rpm (the tachometer is redlined at 10,000), except just off idle and up to about 3,000 rpm, where the rough power delivery needs some refinement, particularly if the rider wants to tackle any tricky low-speed terrain where smooth throttle modulation is critical. Cruising along at an actual 60 mph (measured with GPS – the bike’s speedometer read 10-12% high, but its tripmeter was accurate), the engine turns over a smooth, leisurely 4,500 rpm. As speed and engine rpm climb above 6,000 rpm or so, a little vibration creeps into the grips, but it’s not bothersome.

Like its clean, rugged styling, simplicity is a welcome feature of the SRT750. Other than the 5-inch color TFT display with adjustable day/night modes, gear indicator, and both Bluetooth and TPMS connections (for a future smartphone app and tire pressure sending units, perhaps?), the bike gets by without many bells and whistles. Lighting is all LED, including the bright twin-beam headlight and nicely faired-in front turnsignals with clear lenses, and there’s a USB port right by the ignition switch. Brake and clutch levers are adjustable, aluminum braced handguards are standard, and extra buttons on each switch pod are ready for optional heated grips and fog lights.

Some timing chains drive the water pump, too, and sometimes the engine must be removed to replace a timing chain. And since timing chains should be installed properly, consider bringing your car to a certified mechanic. There are a lot of other engine parts that must be removed before you even get to the timing chain!

550lbs!! That thing is a heavy as a BMW. Not sure how this helps Benelli get a foothold in the US – seems parasitic. If I was looking at this western/china partnership, and beyond KTM, the Moto Morini X Cape looks a lot more appealing.

The timing chain and gears can be installed after the crankshaft and camshaft are in place, especially in cam-in-block (OHV) engines.

Of course, a broken timing belt may have other adverse effects on your engine depending on what type it is. There are two kinds of piston engines you need to consider if you want to know what could happen when your timing chain fails.

There’s a possibility you’ll hear a noise coming from the area of the timing chain cover. This noise is often caused by a loose timing chain that may be due to a faulty timing chain tensioner, guide or other issues.

There is always some mechanism connecting the crankshaft to the camshaft. For years there were engines that had the two shafts directly geared to each other, and there were timing marks on the cam and crank gears that had to be properly aligned during engine assembly. On those engines, the cam gear would typically be some kind of composite material to prevent the gears from making noise, which cam-driving gears are prone to do in a big way.

It’s true, timing chains can wear out and stretch, especially if the engine isn’t maintained properly with the correct type of oil. But there are also many timing chains that do last the life of the vehicle. Thanks for the feedback!

There are also differences in design. A timing belt is a large black rubber band that loops around the pulleys and a series of tensioners. It features teeth that hug the grooves around the outer side of the pulley. The belt has either a smooth or patterned outer surface.

More serious problems will start to arise if you ignore the early signs so make sure to give the timing chain a check as soon as you hear a noise coming from its mounting location.

With a better rear shock and a taller aftermarket or accessory windscreen for colder weather, I wouldn’t hesitate to slip some soft luggage on the SRT750 and take off on a cross-country ride, especially since it sips fuel when ridden conservatively. You could also pop on some 50/50 tires, bash bars, and a skid plate for that exposed oil filter and whatnot underneath and knock the rubber inserts out of the footpegs, and it would be ready for light adventure riding. Or just leave it as-is, in sport mode, and wait for an adventure version of the SRT750 to arrive with all of that and a 19-inch front wheel. At this price, many riders would find it easy to own both.

At 32.9 inches, the SRT750’s nonadjustable seat height is reasonable, though the pillion perch is much higher, so take care not to bash your knee on a passenger grabrail when swinging a leg over. With my 29-inch inseam, I found that, once seated, I could touch my feet down and paddle the bike around easily, and the cleated footpegs with vibration-damping removable rubber inserts are nicely positioned under the rider’s seat. When we first got the SRT750, its wide, tapered tubular handlebar was adjusted well up and forward, like you might position it to accommodate standing while riding off-road.

Your car’s engine contains many components, one of which is either a timing belt or a timing chain. Although the timing chain doesn’t get as much attention atims some other car parts, it is extremely important. If the timing chain fails, it can cause an array of problems—including catastrophic engine damage.

Image

With no progressive linkage, the rear shock is a disappointment. Even after you make the effort to adjust its unwieldy ring-and-locknut spring preload for the rider’s weight, a bumpy road will quickly overwhelm the shock. The bike’s handling is sensitive to rear spring preload adjustment – too much and it turns in too quickly, too little and it suffers from some squirminess in front. All the more reason it should have a remote spring preload adjuster rather than just a knuckle-busting ring-and-locknut, particularly if your load will change frequently. The slotted clicker rebound damping adjuster is easily accessed and helps fine-tune the ride in back, but if this were my bike, I’d swap out the shock for a higher-quality damper.

When getting a new car timing chain, most experts recommend soaking it in oil before installing it in the engine to make sure that it’s fully lubricated.

If this new bike appears to be following the same ethos. The TRK502’s wheelbase is 59 inches, this bike is 60 inches. So it’s even bigger. The seat looks super roomy as well. I hope they go the same route as the 502 when it’s released here – hand guards, luggage rack, crash bars, and center stand are all OEM equipment on the 502X. (That’s about $500 worth of accessories!)

Timing belts and timing chains both serve the same purpose—and that’s to keep the camshaft(s) and crankshaft in sync. But there are differences. For one, timing belts need to be replaced periodically in accordance with the vehicle manufacturer’s maintenance schedule.

With its wide handlebar, compact wheelbase, steep rake angle, 17-inch wheels, and sticky tires, the SRT750 eats winding roads for breakfast, with an assist from its torquey midrange that helps it power out of corners and squirt from turn to turn. Regular and deliberate shifting helps keep the engine in the meat of the powerband and out of the juddery low-rpm zone where the fueling needs some work. But the 6-speed transmission and slip/assist clutch work smoothly, and shift lever throw is moderate. On the highway, it’s a comfortable companion that will cruise along at 75 mph from fill-up to fill-up, with only the noisy windscreen and lack of rear suspension performance over repetitive bumps to detract from the experience.

Tested here in preproduction form, the 2023 SRT750’s final price, specifications, and equipment may change a bit before it hits dealer showrooms this spring. While the bike may eventually be offered in off-road-ready adventure guise as well, the lighter sport version we tested has cast aluminum wheels and Pirelli Angel GT sport-touring tires instead of heavier spoked wheels and dirt-ready buns. While the lack of tubular guards and bash plates certainly saves weight, the SRT750 still tips the scales at a rather heavy 552 lb for a bike in this displacement class.

Over the past thirty five years, overhead camshafts have become more prevalent; engine designers began to favor timing belts over chains because timing belts need no lubrication and are much easier to replace when replacement is needed. Timing belts typically snake around idler pulleys and a special tensioner, and on most timing belt engines, the timing belt will drive the water pump, and on some, the belt even spins the oil pump (see 2.2L Toyota engines).

Whatcausestiming chainto break

In 2005, QJ Motor acquired the name and assets of the 100-year-old Italian company Benelli, which has helped it grow market share in Europe and America. The company maintains a design center in Italy to give its two-wheelers some European flare, and it has manufactured an extensive line of Italian-designed, Benelli-badged modern motorcycles in China since 2008.

Engines with timing belts may or may not be damaged if the timing belt strips its teeth. Fords and Toyotas with timing belts don’t usually suffer engine damage when the belt fails, but Mitsubishi and Kia engines typically DO suffer engine damage. Some Kia four cylinders will quite literally destroy themselves if they jump time because they tend to snap the heads off valves. Mitsubishi timing belted engines will usually just bend valves.

If, however, you are the DIY type, you may purchase a timing chain or belt and install it yourself at a price of around $80 to $250. But be aware that some timing chain kits may cost as much as $500 even from the parts store, and are very difficult to replace. A good timing chain kit will come with all the tensioners, the gears, and even a water pump in some cases.

With better engine balance than a 360-degree crank, less rocking couple than a 180, and the same firing order as a V-Twin, a 270-degree crankshaft offers more character without a large sacrifice in power – hence its use in so many late-model parallel-Twins. In almost all cases, including the SRT750, vibration that would otherwise result from the uneven firing order is kept at bay by a gear-driven counterbalancer shaft.

Timing belts require routine replacement—timing chains do not. Unless the timing chain is broken, stretched, or otherwise compromised, there’s no reason to change it. If there is something wrong with the timing chain, your car will likely exhibit one or more problems.

An interference engine will bend or break valves because the pistons and the valves will impact each other if the engine jumps time. Timing chain equipped engines are ALWAYS interference engines. And again, timing belt engines may or may not be, depending on the manufacturer. So, a jumped chain or belt can call for belt replacement, a valve job, or a replacement engine, depending on engine design.

To build the SRT750, QJ Motor has sourced quality components from around the world and integrated them into a solid package with great fit and finish, designed in Italy and manufactured in a modern, ISO9001-certified factory in China. It’s worth a look for far more than just its lower price – the bike is a blast to ride, and with nearly 400 SSR Motorsports dealers around the U.S., support for the QJ lineup should be adequate.

SRW SF-8™ Cleaner is a strong and fast-acting adhesive cleaner geared towards the SRW SF-8™ adhesive to clean up any hardscape or construction project.

The timing chain is the last to get lubrication upon engine start-up, so this process can help extend the replacement timing chain’s service life.

Pro Tip: Sometimes a loose and rattling chain will rub a hole in the timing cover, necessitating the replacement of the cover.

One way or another, always follow the OEM recommendations for timing belt replacement. If the OEM calls for 60,000 miles, do it BEFORE that mileage. If it’s 104,000 miles, do it early. It’s the best policy. Whether you do it or hire it done, it needs to be done exactly right – a timing belt that is too loose will cause slapping sounds, and a belt that is too tight can make an odd whirring noise, believe it or not, so the timing belt tension has to be just right.

Since it’s a preproduction model, I gave the SRT750 a thorough going-over before riding off the first time, particularly the KYB suspension. A 43mm inverted fork with adjustable spring preload and rebound damping does a nice job up front, with its 6.1 inches of travel resisting excessive dive and offering a compliant but sporty feel over bumps and under braking.

On Jett Tuning’s rear-wheel dyno, the SRT750 made 70.5 hp at 8,600 rpm and 46.6 lb-ft of torque at 7,800, solid peak numbers that are comparable to, say, the Suzuki V-Strom 650. This gives the bike brisk acceleration that most solo riders will find more than exciting enough in the canyons and on the highway, especially since the power is delivered with an Italian operatic bark and great twin-cylinder feel. As long as you’re not in too big a hurry, the engine provides adequate urge when the bike is fully loaded too.

The vehicle maintenance schedule calls for timing belt replacement at a specific mileage, so find out what that mileage is if your engine has a timing belt, and realize that you need to be the one to decide when the timing belt is replaced rather than letting the timing belt decide. The timing belt doesn’t generally choose a convenient moment to fail.

The timing chain on these older V style engines is of the laminated variety, somewhat prone to stretching, but very quiet in its operation. After about 100,000 miles, those laminated chains tend to develop enough stretch so that they sometimes strip the plastic-coated teeth off the cam gear and jump time.

Because of the long distance between the crankshaft and camshaft gears, there are nylon guides to prevent the timing chain from making noise; there’ll be a guide on both sides of the chain(s), and one of the guides typically has a tensioner that has a piston-style tensioner, usually driven by oil pressure, but sometimes driven by an internal gas charge. When a timing chain of this design begins to rattle and the camshaft(s) get out of time, it’s usually because one or more of the nylon guides and/or the timing chain tensioner have failed.

The Benelli/QJ Motor team in Italy based the SRT750’s overall design on the Benelli TRK502 adventure bike. It blends a classic ADV beak and seemingly giant fuel tank – really just 4.9 gallons – with an open trellis frame, exposed engine, and swoopy tailsection. The SRT750 may be the right bike at the right time given current market conditions – particularly because its $8,499 price tag is quite appealing when compared with similar adventure-styled motorcycles from Japan and Europe.

The cost of replacing the timing chain varies depending on where you’re having it replaced and your vehicle model. Prepare to have a repair budget of around $1,000 to $2,500 for both the parts cost and labor if you’re expecting a timing chain replacement.

I will be showing your article to a customer. I firmly disagree with one thing, but your article is “geared”(I had to say it! Sorry)more towards anything other than an American V8 or V6. Timing chains were known to stretch and wear out their nylon cam gears in as little as 80k miles, hopefully not the life of the engine! By rotating the crank BACKWARDS to TDC, removing the distributor cap, then rotating it FORWARDS until the distributor rotor begins to move, check the timing mark, how many degrees you’ve moved the crank (divided by 2 because cam spins at half speed of crank)and that’s how many degrees you’re”out of phase/sync.” Rule of thumb: IF YOU SAY “WOW!” BECAUSE YOUVE TURNED THE CRANK SO FAR WITH NO ROTOR MOVEMENT, YA NEED A NEW ONE.(also be sure to check distributor drive gear to be sure it hasn’t sheared the pin) WELL WRITTEN AND THANK YOU

The crankshaft on those engines is always fitted with a steel gear and keyed to the crankshaft boss to keep it one with the crank, and the camshaft typically has an aluminum gear with a similar arrangement and the camshaft gear teeth is heavily coated in plastic. The diameter of the camshaft gear is twice that of the crankshaft gear because the camshaft only spins at half the speed of the crankshaft by design. This is true even on modern engines.

A silent chain operates quietly but has the tendency to stretch after some time. Also known as a flat-link or Morse type, this chain has metal links that appear to be stretching because the pin bushings at each joint wear out.

For the first part, there is the non-interference engine, also referred to by some as a “free spinning” engine. In this type of engine, the pistons can’t contact the valves even if the engine jumps time. The only thing you need to worry about if you have a non-interference engine is stalling or a serious loss of power, but you’ll definitely need a tow truck.

QJ Motor isn’t exactly a household name here in the U.S., but given the Chinese company’s global ambitions, that may soon change, especially with the 2023 QJ Motor SRT750.

So far, QJ Motor’s only public foray into the U.S. has been with the Benelli lineup, which is sold by Southern California-based importer SSR Motorsports. SSR also offers its own line of dirtbikes and small street and dual-sport machines through its national network of motorcycle dealers.

QJ Motor is an enormous manufacturer that produces millions of motorcycles, scooters, engines, parts, and more every year, and it exports a fair share of its products from China to 130 countries. Since the motorcycle division’s launch in 1985, QJ Motor (Zhejiang Qianjiang Motorcycle Co. Ltd.) has also partnered behind the scenes with several familiar motorcycle OEMs here and abroad to make some of their engines, key components, and even complete motorcycles.

You may be wondering—how long does a timing chain last? Unlike timing belts, timing chains are designed to last the life of the vehicle. Of course, that doesn’t always happen. Timing chains can break for a number of reasons, which we’ll discuss shortly.

Timing chainsymptoms

If the timing chain jumps enough teeth on the older V engines, some of the valves can be opening far enough out of time that they can be bent by rising piston crowns.

A roller chain produces less friction and stretch than a silent chain. It turns into a double roller chain if two chains are used side by side.

Having tested the waters in the U.S. with Benelli since 2016, QJ Motor will brave the fickle American market in 2023 with its house brand, once again through its faithful partner SSR. Although the domestic QJ Motor lineup comprises more than two dozen motorcycles, scooters, and electric bikes, the first to make landfall here will be the 2023 QJ Motor SRT750, capitalizing on the current popularity of adventure-styled machines.

My Dad & both brothers owned a ’68 Dodge Polara. Same car, juz passed down. I have this weird memory of my Dad telling my oldest brother that it need to have a “California Setting” and I think it was in reference to the timing perhaps. Have you ever heard of this? I know someone who has another old Mopar with issues. Juz wondering if that would be something that she needs to check? Any info is more than I have now ? Thanks!

If it’s anything like the Benelli TRK502, it’s heavy because it’s GIGANTIC. The TRK502 is an enormous motorcycle, comfortable for two fat people, two-up, with a ton of gear. Benelli’s 302S is the same way. Small motor, but full-sized bike that fits a tall or fat man easily, and doesn’t make him look like a bear on a tricycle (I’m looking at you 300 Ninja). It also uses 120/160 tire sizes. At first glance it looks like a 600.

The timing chain keeps the camshaft(s) and crankshaft in sync. For your car’s engine to run properly, the valves, which are operated by the camshaft, need to be timed with the movement of the pistons that connect to the crankshaft. Also, on some vehicles, the timing chain drives other components, such as the water pump and balance shaft.

Some timing chains experience accelerated wear due to lack of vehicle maintenance (i.e. oil changes). Timing belts are not usually lubricated by engine oil (except for on some European makes), but timing chains always are. And that makes regular oil changes vital to timing chain longevity.

QJ Motor says it may also add a centerstand and tubular engine/fairing guards as standard equipment, though personally I would save the latter for the adventure version. Don’t look for riding modes, traction control, or windscreen adjustability, though the SRT750 does include some useful storage under the locking seat, easy battery access, right-angle valve stems, shapely passenger grabrails, and a handy top trunk/luggage rack. If the DOHC valve train inspection every 15,000 miles reveals that the shim-under-bucket lash needs adjustment, the camshafts may need to come out, but there’s nothing unusual about that or the rest of the SRT750’s maintenance needs.

Although the bike’s ergonomics work well sitting or standing, its Pirelli Angel GT sport-touring tires, a 17-inch front wheel, and no tip-over protection indicates that this model is meant for the blacktop. But spoon on some 50/50 tires and you could certainly tackle dirt roads and gentle trails (though its limited suspension travel and ground clearance are unlikely to enhance the experience).

Got me excited for a moment. A 750cc 270 degree twin, trellis frame, Italian styling and sound, and adjustable suspension. All on 17s with a half fairing. Then I read the details. At least 50lbs overweight, fueling issues below 3000rpm, and poor suspension performance. Triumph’s Tiger Sport 660 weighs 100lbs less, makes nearly identical power, has an adjustable windscreen and TC. The Triumph’s suspension and brakes aren’t as fancy on paper but they both work really well. Superb handling, smoothness, refinement and all-day comfort even for a tall guy. Spend the extra grand on the Triumph if you’re looking for a bike like this.

Timing chains don’t usually break (timing belts do!), but chains can get far enough out of time so that the vehicle can’t be driven. If you’re driving on the highway, the engine can instantly shut down without any warning. If this happens to you, immediately and carefully pull over to the side of the road while your car still has its momentum. This can happen with any type of internal combustion engine.

The vehicle maintenance schedule calls for timing belt replacement at a specific mileage, so find out what that mileage is if your engine has a timing belt, and realize that you need to be the one to decide when the timing belt is replaced rather than letting the timing belt decide.

Once adjusted back down, I found the reach to the handlebar and grips easy enough but still a little farther away than I like, and the otherwise comfortable seat tended to slide me forward into the tank. Wind protection is just fair since the nonadjustable screen is only mid-sized and positioned well forward, which lets the noisy windblast roll down in front rather than over the rider. The lower body and upper legs are mostly tucked in snugly behind the tank and fairing lowers, and the handguards are quite effective at blocking the cold. The TFT display is bright and easy to read, and all the handlebar switches and buttons – some of which are nicely backlit – come readily to hand.

Impressive-looking radial-mounted Brembo 4-piston brake calipers clamp large floating dual front discs and bring the SRT750 to a halt smoothly and quickly, with a Brembo radial-pump master cylinder that gives the front brakes excellent feel at the adjustable lever. Surprisingly, the rear caliper is a nice opposed 2-piston Brembo rather than an economy 1-piston pin-slide unit, and it does a great job as well, with the pedal well-positioned directly below the ball of the foot. Overall, the brakes make for a fairly carefree riding experience, especially since they’re backed up with ABS that works smoothly and reliably when engaged. Unfortunately, the ABS can’t be turned off or adjusted, a consideration if you plan to hustle the bike around off-road.

Each bank of cylinders on an Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) has a camshaft that has spin in time with the power-producing crankshaft, which is driven by the pistons. The engine is basically a metal machine that breathes in air and fuel, uses it to produce power, and then sends the processed gasses out the tailpipe as CO2 and water vapor, and the valves that are operated by the camshaft must operate in the right sequence and in the right way.

Timing chainvstimingbelt

Timing chains, on the other hand, are like bicycle chains, only thicker and denser. These are relatively heavier than timing belts as the chain links are made of steel.

But even if they don’t jump, they can stretch enough to allow the camshaft to be spinning just a little bit behind the crankshaft, putting the camshaft slightly out of time. This affects valve timing and causes a loss of engine vacuum, as well as, a loss of engine power.,

In keeping with the trend in the middleweight adventure class toward compact parallel-Twins that are simpler and cheaper to build than V-Twins, the SRT750 is powered by a 754cc Twin with liquid cooling, DOHC, 4 valves per cylinder, Bosch EFI, 6 speeds, and chain final drive. Not much to get excited about – until you start it up, at which point the engine’s 270-degree crankshaft creates a growling drumbeat idle reminiscent of a performance-tuned 90-degree V-Twin. Closing my eyes at a stop, I could swear I was sitting on a Ducati.

Should the nylon chain guides or the chain tensioner fail, or should the engine develop a loss of oil pressure so that the tensioner doesn’t work right (as on 5.4L three-valve Fords), the timing chain will be free to slap around against other components; sometimes a loose and rattling chain will rub a hole in the timing cover, necessitating the replacement of the cover.
