The Purpose of Wheel Bearings - what is a wheel bearing and what does it do
You can quickly recognize a timing belt because it looks like it has a set of teeth running along its entire length. A timing belt keeps the camshaft and crankshaft turning at the correct rate. The camshaft helps the engine to function by opening valves in time with the crankshaft. This timing is critical to ensure that the engine functions properly, and the timing belt makes all of this possible.

O-ring – Found mostly on small block Chevrolet engines, this style of valve stem seal fits in a second groove on the valve stem, just below the keeper groove. Some applications use both O-ring and umbrella type seals together.
A timing belt is vital for your vehicle to function. Without a maintained timing belt, the camshaft and crankshaft can become mistimed, causing you to be stranded on the road in the best-case scenario and left with a damaged engine in the worst case. You can check with your owner’s manual to see how often your timing belt should be changed out, and be sure to visit your independent auto shop to have it replaced.
At this point, you should see the valve stem seal. There are special pliers available for removing positive style valve stem seals. Remove it and clean the valve and valve guide area with degreaser.

Like any car parts, timing belts will wear out over time and, if neglected, cause further damage to your vehicle. In a worst-case scenario, the valves and rods can push through the engine cover, ruining the engine. And failing to get the auto repair your timing belt needs will create a much more costly trip to the auto shop. In lighter scenarios, your engine will just stop running.
Using a C-clamp style valve spring compressor, compress the spring. If installing an O-ring style seal, install it now. Apply a small amount of grease to the keeper area of the valve. Install the valve keepers and slowly release the tension on the spring. Once the compressor is removed, use a soft-face mallet and give the valve a light rap to seat everything.

Unlike getting an oil change or a [tire rotation](https://www.naylorsautorepairidaho.com/blog/everything-you-need-know-about-tire-rotation), a timing belt isn’t normally the first thing we think about when it comes to getting a routine auto repair. However, a timing belt is a critical car component that keeps your engine running smoothly. So what is it? And how often does it need to be replaced? Let’s talk about the importance of timing belts so that you can be certain that your car will get you where you need to go.
Most timing belts are difficult to see without taking apart the engine cover, so access to the belt will require many engine components. If you don’t have easy access to your belt, it’s best to leave the replacement to a professional mechanic.
Deflector – Also known as umbrella seals, this type of seal is secured to the valve stem and moves with the valve to shield the valve guide from excess oil.
It’s best to refer back to your owner’s manual to find out how often you should pay attention to your timing belt, and be sure to stick to what the guide states. Timing belts are fairly inexpensive, but if you neglect the timing belt for too long, you’ll be risking thousands of dollars worth of significant damage to your vehicle.

Another symptom comes in the form of a clicking or squealing sound, which can be a signal that your timing belt is missing some of its teeth. If you begin experiencing any of these symptoms, a faulty timing belt may be the cause. A quick trip to an independent auto shop will help you get to the root of the problem.

O-ring style seals are installed AFTER the compressed spring is on the head but before the keepers are installed. The O-ring style seals control the oil that puddles up on top of the retainer.
Depending on driving habits, such as frequent stop-and-go driving and heavy acceleration, a timing belt can wear out sooner than the recommended mileage for replacement. Extreme temperatures can also put additional stress on belts.
Check the amount of play the valve stem has in the guide. Check against the manufacturer spec. If it is out of spec, remove the cylinder head(s) and send it out for valve guide work. Replacing valve stem seals with worn valve guides is only a temporary fix for oil consumption.
Once all seals are done install the valve train, adjust valve clearance (if needed) and install the valve cover with a new Fel-Pro valve cover gasket.
Designed to control how much oil lubricates the valve stem, valve stem seals play an important role in engine lubrication. These seals allow a controlled amount of oil to lubricate the valve stem as it moves in the valve guide. Without these seals controlling the flow of oil, it can cause many issues like excess oil in the combustion chamber, fouled spark plugs, increased oil consumption and catalytic converter degradation.

Lube the valve stem with oil before installing it in the guide. Install the valve into the valve guide and install the seal installation tool over the top of the valve. Install the positive style seal and seat it onto the guide or slide the umbrella seal onto the valve stem. Remove the installation tool.
Make sure the engine block deck surface is flat, clean and dry before installing the new Fel-Pro head gasket and the cylinder head. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for reassembling the engine.
New valve stem seals can be installed on or off the vehicle. While the process is similar, there are some differences depending on which variation you choose. From removing the old seals to installing new Fel-Pro valve stem seals, follow these steps for a successful repair.

A timing belt should be routinely changed, just like the engine filter or other similar car parts. Now that technology has improved, timing belts don’t need to be changed as often as in previous decades, but you should still book an appointment to replace the belt between 60,000 and 100,000 miles. In the past, every 60,000 miles was a hard rule. But now, many vehicles can drive up to 100,000 miles before seeing the significant wear and tear these belts can experience.
Remove the installation tool. Apply a light coat of grease where the keepers are installed. Put the compressed spring onto the cylinder head.

The amount of damage to your vehicle will roughly depend on your engine type. Interference engines have more compression and more power, so you risk more damage with this system than a non-interference engine.
Since the cylinder head is off the vehicle, most jobs will use a C-clamp style spring compressor to remove the valve springs. Keep all springs and keepers in order to ensure they go back to their original location. If cylinder head machine work is to be performed, i.e., valve job, valve guide replacement, resurfacing, etc., the valve stem seals will be installed after this.
Positive – The most common style used in today’s vehicles, positive seals are attached to the valve guide boss and function as squeegees. They wipe and meter oil on the stem as they pass through the seals.
Once clean, you’re ready to install the new seal. Using the included installation tool, put it over the top of the valve. Be sure to use the installation tool; it keeps you from damaging the seal during installation. Slide the valve seal down on the guide/valve. Seat a positive style seal with an appropriately sized socket and lightly tap the seal onto the guide. Remove the installation tool for the next valve. Apply clean oil to valve stem seal after installation.
