Improper clutch use can shorten the life of clutch components such as the thrust bearing. Examples of improper clutch use include:

While the clutch pedal is pushed down, the bearing moves inward. The bearing will apply pressure to the spring of the pressure plate, freeing the clutch disc from the flywheel and interrupting the transmission. This allows you to correctly and safely engage and switch gears.
When the clutch is disengaged, the transmission’s input shaft and the engine’s crankshaft are rotating at different speeds. The pilot bearing allows for this difference. This is why a faulty pilot bearing makes its most noise when the clutch pedal is completely depressed and the clutch itself is completely disengaged. It’s located in the center of the crankshaft flange or flywheel.

Early signs of the pilot failing may be noise whenever the clutch is disengaged. The driver may also notice that the transmission is difficult to shift between gears or hard to put into reverse or first gear when stopped.
JTEKT Corporation has 61 plants in total (steering products, driveline components, bearings and machine tools) located all over the world. For our Koyo bearings we have the following number of plants.Japan: 5 plants Asia & Oceania: 8 plants Europe: 7 plants North & South America: 1 plant

Another common cause of damage to the clutch trust / release bearing is if the clutch cable is not adjusted over time, and the clutch release / throw out bearing is in constant contact with the clutch pressure plate. This will cause it to constantly spin reducing it’s life dramatically.
The clutch thrust bearing (also known as the release bearing or the throw-out bearing) is a small but important part of your car’s clutch system. It is mounted on the housing of your clutch and slides on a hollow shaft. Attached to the clutch bearing is the clutch fork, which moves the clutch bearing with the help of hydraulic or cable pressure.
When the pilot is failing, or has failed, the input shaft will be allowed to walk around causing it to go off centre. When this happens, the transmission input shaft will begin moving around inside the transmission causing the gears and synchronizers to be off centre resulting in the transmission popping out of gear.

Are you experiencing unusual noises, difficulty shifting gears, or clutch-related issues in your vehicle? It might be time to consider a clutch thrust bearing replacement.
Most rear wheel drive, and some front wheel drive, vehicles with manual transmissions use a pilot bearing/bushing. The pilot bearing/bushing supports and centres the transmission input shaft and clutch disc. When the clutch is disengaged, the pilot bearing/bushing allows the flywheel to maintain engine RPM while the input shaft is slowing down and stopping.
Check the fingers/levers on the pressure plate for excessive wear. Check the t/o bearing for the same, plus pitting, concentricity, ease of rotation. Too bad there is not a roller t/o bearing made for these, at least that I know of. Check pilot bushing for wear and condition, as it looks like the tip of the input shaft is quite worn. Check the bushings and pin in the throw out bearing arm for wear and concentricity. Check the clutch disc and flywheel for wear as well- you will need to disassemble pressure plate from flywheel and you will need a clutch alignment tool to reinstall, but they are cheap. If this far into it and any of these parts look questionable, just get a clutch kit and t/o bearing and replace, as you are now familiar with the pains involved in removing the engine and tranny, so probably don't want do it again in the near future. Also don't forget about the tranny itself and replace any leaking gaskets, front/rear seal, and the fluid inside. Might as well do it now. Use new pressure plate bolts if possible, as once torqued they stretch and if you reuse, one could fail, not likely on these cars, but possible. Just my 2 cents.

A worn or damaged pilot bearing will make a whining or grinding noise. It will be very loud if the bearing is completely damaged. It occurs whenever the crankshaft and input shaft are rotating at different speeds. A clutch release bearing is different; it will make a chirping or squealing noise as soon as the bearing touches the pressure plate’s diaphragm. Note that release bearings make noise with much less pedal travel.

In most vehicles, the clutch bearing isn’t a scheduled maintenance item. This means that it usually lasts the life of the vehicle. However, the clutch thrust bearing can become worn over time, especially in older vehicles. This is due to constant contact with other parts and exposure to heat and cooling, worn off clutch lining dust entering the clutch trust bearing through failure / damage to clutch thrust bearing seals.
At Grimmer Motors, our trustworthy mechanics are skilled in all sorts of clutch bearing related services. This allows us to quickly identify, diagnose and fix clutch bearing problems in your vehicle.
Pilot bearings are either bearings or bushings. The bearing type can be ball, roller or needle bearings packed in grease. If the manufacturer recommends adding bearing grease, be careful to avoid contaminating the clutch disk or the surface of the flywheel. Pilot bushings are brass and infused with lubrication. Adding lubrication will actually increase friction with these soft metal type bushings. Check with the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations before adding any lubrication to a pilot bearing.
Following the acquisition of the Needle Roller Bearing Division in 2010, JTEKT has announced full brand integration starting on 1 January 2013. Needle Roller Bearings, branded Koyo-Torrington until the end of 2012, will now bear the Koyo logo exclusively, thus adding to the very complete range of Koyo ball and roller bearings.
