Gradually loosen the tensioner adjustment so that it can swing back against the timing belt. Slide the tensioner into place, but don’t allow it to hit the belt. If you aren’t using a spring-loaded tensioner, tension the belt according to the vehicle manufacturer’s guidelines.

Loosen the tensioner and re-tension the timing belt to meet the vehicle manufacturer guidelines. Test the tension with a tension tester, torque the tensioner and pivot the bolts to the manufacturer’s recommended torque setting.

Remove any fittings that are blocking your access to the timing belt. You may have to remove the power steering pump, alternator and/or conditioning compressor. Don’t remove any pressurised fittings from the air conditioning compressor.
