The passenger side bearing needs replacing now as well, so if the hub does need to come off, then I would like to try and skip that whole ordeal by buying a new knuckle, hub, and bearing and tossing the old knuckle completely. The knuckle assembly has a backing plate attached as well, but I don't know if I could easily remove the old backing plate. Can the old plate be taken off and reused without any hub separation being involved?
Last year a friend helped me replace the driver side front wheel bearing. It was my first time doing any type of car repair and there was a lot to take in, so my memory has gotten a little fuzzy on the details. We ran into some serious difficulty in trying to pull the hub so we could access the bearing; a hub pulling kit and slide hammer were useless. Everything was very badly rusted and seized together, and took several hours over 2 days to finally get to the bearing. We ended up removing the whole knuckle, but I can't remember if we did end up getting the hub off, or if we were able to replace the bearing without having to remove the hub from the knuckle. Can anyone refresh my memory on whether the bearing can be removed with the hub still attached to the knuckle on this particular vehicle?
