I purchased a couple of spares from LMS and trimmed them down on the lathe to the required size prior to dismantling the lathe. They are only a few dollars each. I also purchased some of the internal ones which need a small step turned on them to allow the inner spacers to correctly seat against the face of the inner ring of the taper bearings. The suggestion of making an aluminium version is also good as the plastic spacer has a higher value of elasticity which can make the preload adjustment fiddly in cases where the inner of the taper bearings are very tight on the spindle shaft. Adjusting the C nuts at the thread cutting gear end pulls the inner bearing casings together and that takes a bit of force with bearings which are tight on the spindle shaft. Bearings that are a sliding but firm fit are not a problem using the plastic spacer as you dont tighten the nuts that hard that you lock the bearings up. They must be able to rotate freely and for that the C nuts are adjusted for the correct amount of free rotation. That is the reason there are 2 nuts against each other. They lock the position of the nuts in place so that the shaft is free to rotate smoothly. If there was only one nut it would loosen or tighten depending on the direction of rotation of the shaft and pretty soon the spindle would be loose or too tight. Also, if you fit taper bearings you will find that adjustment needs to be made several times till the bearings finally settle in. In my case it took about 10 hours of running time. I did not use a metal spacer but I think it would be better as there is some wear and distortion produced on the face of the spacer during these adjustments. Not sure I fully understand this discussion.  But it's the nature of a tapered roller bearing for the cup to move away from the cone under radial loads.  So I think a strong metallic spacer is indicated.  My inclination would be to make it of steel so as to match the thermal expansion rate of the spindle.AlanAt 08:39 AM 5/12/2012 -0700, you wrote:
