A sprocket is a profiled wheel with teeth that meshes with a chain. A sprocket is not a gear. It is distinguished from a gear in that sprockets are never meshed together directly. Sprockets transmit rotary motion between two shafts, and are one of the most popular ways to transmit power. Sprockets are utilized to decrease or increase speed by differentials in the number of teeth between driver and driven sprocket. When selecting, replacing or identifying a sprocket, it is important to know the dimensions (and ideally the part number) of the chain which is to run upon it, specifically the pitch (center distance between teeth), roller diameter, and the roller width of the chain. This is necessary to identify the type and size sprocket. The number of teeth on the sprocket is also necessary if a part number is not available.
