The weak economy and cheaper overseas production opportunities will claim another 100 or so Johnson City jobs over the next year and a half. Alemite Inc., which manufactures lubrication tools, equipment and systems for industrial use, told its employees a couple of weeks ago it would phase out production at its 167 Roweland Drive facility. The company currently employs about 150 people, and around 50 will keep jobs in distribution, warehousing and sourcing, a company spokesman said Tuesday. “We’re pretty upset,” a veteran employee whose job will be gone by sometime next spring said Tuesday. “Our jobs are going overseas.” The employee, who wanted to remain anonymous, said the news came July 15, but that some work had been shifted overseas — the worker thought to China and India — over the past couple of years. Indeed, the local Business Journal showed the company having 350 employees in its 2008 “Book of Lists,” but just 160 in this year’s version. “As we recently informed our employees, we will discontinue most production at our Johnson City location over the next 18 months,” the spokesman said. “We regret having to make this move, but the combination of a weak economy and the availability of more cost-competitive sourcing opportunities elsewhere have made it essential.” The employee said Alemite’s owners appeared to have been lining up those “cost-competitive sourcing opportunities” for the past couple years. He said some work already has transferred and that the company has had a couple of sizable layoffs during the current economic downturn. “We’re getting stuff in from China and India where they’re making it now, and we’re assembling it.” Alemite has been in Johnson City for several decades, but in early 2006 was purchased by the group that owns St. Louis-based Lincoln Industrial. Lincoln is owned by the Harbour Group, a privately owned St. Louis company, and is part of its “Lubricating Systems Group.” “We got tied in with Lincoln a few years ago and they worked on getting factories set up over in China and India,” the worker said. At the time Harbour purchased Alemite, Harbour CEO Sam Fox touted Alemite’s market leadership and credibility as “a pioneer in the development of modern lubrication.” Fox also said Harbour had “a long history of building businesses and will continue to aggressively grow our Lubricating Systems Group, both organically and through complementary acquisitions in what remains a fragmented market.” The grease guns, hose reels, grease fittings, pumps and related products — many for the automotive servicing industry (think Jiffy Lube) — will see heightened production for a while, the employee said, as Alemite builds inventory in preparation for down time while production equipment is moved overseas. The employee said workers — who will get separation pay based on job classification and experience, as well as “outplacement assistance” — are hoping to “pick up on education” since they expect the job losses will qualify for enhanced benefits through the federal Trade Adjustment Assistance program.
