All the races can be removed and installed with conventional tool. So here is the write up of the job. The most difficult task was removing the outer bearing/race assembly off the hub. I destroyed the bearing holder and totaled the race. I would suggest bring the hub to an independent or the dealer and pay a few bucks to have then do this. They should not charge much. I figure $25-30. If it's over $50 I would do it myself. I did not get a price for doing it.

I was quoted $400-435 from 2 independent shops and $775 from the dealer. I wanted to learn how to do this job (35-130) The MB service manual calls for 11 specialty tools to complete this job. I had a good conversation with the old Mercedes specialist at the dealer and asked what "specialty" tools are really required. He said, "Just the Special Castle Socket: MB 115 589 02 07 00."

The SKF kit is all inclusive, and this is a good write up. I ended up using an electric impact and micrometer to set my end play and settled on .002" before locking it in. The job really isn't as bad as it seems. I've been avoiding it for years and knocked the left side out last night in a couple hours. Doing the right side this evening with some minor tweakage! All in all, not too bad of a job. A nice clam shell puller, or an appropriately sized posilock puller would make the removal of the inner race of the outter bearing much easier. If you destroy the cage, there's a nice lip to grab onto to get it started, then you can grab it from behind.

I just bought a 1983 240D and pulled both rear wheel bearings. Stupidly, I found they had recently been done. As both calipers were seized I am surprised. Anyway I need two crush washers and two "nut flanges". Also pic #30 does not show the "nut flange" locked to the nut. It should be. Please contact me I need those parts. Thanks, Mark A

One other thing, people keep talking on forums about it getting tight before the bearings are seated - that's the crush washer engaging. Significant effort is required to yield the crush spacer to set the end play. Don't be shy!

Follow all safety guidelines and wear eye protection. Use the proper equipment and tools, and be careful. Failure to follow safety precautions can lead to injury, or even death. Always use safety jacks when raising the car up on hydraulic jacks. The brake pads of your car may contain dust particles that are hazardous to your health. When in doubt, wear breathing protection, such as a respirator. The use of nitrile gloves is highly recommended, as some fluids, such as motor oil, can be damaging to the skin.

This is great information. I already packed the front wheel bearings of my Mercedes 240d with Amsoil All Purpose #2 grease and wanted to do the back bearings and had no idea where to start. Thank you for the information and pictures.
