The pilot of the aircraft, Sigizmund Levanevsky, was summoned to Moscow to attend a meeting of the Politburo. When questioned about the aircraft, he said it was underpowered and blamed Tupolev. Just over a year later, in September 1934, a second prototype with an improved M-34R engine spent 75 hours in the air, covering 7,712 miles in a single trip.
