The transmission seal doesn’t directly contribute to the transmission’s role of transferring power to the wheels and applying gear ratios. However, keeping the transmission seal working properly is very important because leaking transmission fluid can cause serious transmission issues.

Your vehicle’s transmission will struggle to shift gears without enough transmission fluid. Expect gear shifts to be slower and clunkier. As a result, your ability to accelerate will be hampered.

Brown Aircraft Supply offers a full range of rubber airplane seals for engines, doors, windows and more, suitable for a wide range of aircraft.

Static seals are relatively simple. They seal fluid by using a thin strip of synthetic rubber that’s wedged between the gap of two conjoined parts. Since rubber is elastic, it can stretch to fill the small gaps between two separate parts. Dynamic seals are a little more complex since the input and output shafts can rotate thousands of times a minute. How does a dynamic transmission seal keep fluid inside when the shaft is constantly moving?

Cam followerbearing

The spherical shape allows this follower to stay close to the cam’s surface without getting caught or wearing excessively. Keep in mind that the follower must be able to drop into any of the depressions on the edge of the cam. If these depressions are too small, the motion will not be transferred accurately. The simplest form of spherical cam follower is a simply a dowel with a rounded end.

Roller Cam Follower Friction is a recurring issue. The roller cam follower addresses this problem. The small wheel of the roller cam follower spins along the cam’s edge. This can work well when there is a somewhat heavier load directly over the cam follower.

Transmission seals play a crucial role in preventing transmission fluid from leaking. There are two types of transmission seals in a vehicle, depending on their purpose. Without a proper seal, your vehicle can leak transmission fluid and develop serious issues.

Great fan of yours, great to have someone of your talent and knowledge willing to share and give guidance to beginners, thanks Dug

Most often, the weight of whatever part you are driving will keep the follower against the cam. Sometimes it is necessary to ensure that this contact is maintained. One option is to use a compression spring between the cam follower and the top of the mechanism box. In this situation, the spring pushes the follower down onto the cam surface. This can work well with large flat cam followers or spherical followers with a flat top.

I’ve seen hinged cam followers on web sites but this is my first good look at them. Thanks a lot for demonstrating these concepts.

You can check if the transmission seal is leaking by looking beneath your car. If you notice dark spots, then it’s likely transmission fluid that leaked out.

The cam follower can take various forms. The knife-edge follower is very thin. This means that it will be able to follow the contours of the cam closely. The cam should not be so intricate that the knife-edge gets caught in the cam’s depressions, however. The knife-edge cam follower design creates a lot of wear on both cam and follower. Usually, we don’t require this kind of precision and can use one of the other cam follower types.

There are two types of transmission seals. There are static seals and dynamic seals. Static oil seals are used between two non-moving parts, while a dynamic oil seal is used between a fixed and a moving part. The o-ring is one example of a static seal. O-rings are installed around parts like the oil filters and the front gearbox cover.

If two cams are used in the way just described on either side of the flat cam follower, the resulting motion will be a back-and-forth rotary motion. This combination of two cams and flat cam follower is the basis for many simple automata. The rotation in each direction can be limited as desired by placing stop pins on the cam follower or cam follower shaft.

Cams are the mechanisms that add life to our automata. As many people have noted, they can be viewed as a type of ‘memory’ that allows the mechanism to perform the same motion over and over again. Cams can’t do it alone, however. Cams are usually paired with a cam follower that translates the shape of the rotating cam into a linear motion. Let’s take a look at some practical cam follower designs.

The flat cam follower usually consists of a disc of wood glued to the bottom of the cam follower shaft. The follower is easy to make and doesn’t require a lot of precision. The size of the follower can also increase the time that the cam is in contact with the follower. This type of follower works best with simple, oval shaped cams.

Dynamic seals have a more complicated shape, with one or two lips depending on their design. The outer lip fits into a recess on the transmission case, while the input or output shafts are inserted through the inner lip. A thin coiled spring, known as a garter spring, is fitted along the inner lip. As the input or output shaft spins, the garter spring exerts pressure onto the sealing lip. This constant pressure keeps the rubber sealing lip in contact with the revolving shaft, preventing transmission fluid from seeping through.

Another reason why dynamic seals fail is because of excessive play between the rotating assembly and the inside of the transmission. Front-wheel drive vehicle axle seals can leak if the inner side of the axle rests on the inside of the transmission. The output shaft seal of a transmission can also leak if there’s excessive tailshaft play caused by excessive bearing play.

Both static and dynamic seals deteriorate over time because most oil seals are typically made from synthetic rubber. This material typically hardens or softens after several years of exposure to oxygen, heat, or light. When this happens, the seal can start to fail. Dynamic seals might also wear out faster because they’re constantly in contact with a moving part.

The size, smoothness, length, and placement of the bearing has a big impact on how well the cam and cam follower work together. The bearing must allow the cam follower shaft to move freely. Smoother is better. On the other hand, an oversized bearing will allow the the force of the cam on the follower to tilt the follower shaft which can cause it to jam. A long bearing will help to ensure that the cam follower shaft cannot tilt and bind. The placement of the bearing is also important. If you are having problems with binding, try shifting the bearing and follower so they are not directly over the axle when viewed from the side. Be prepared to experiment to find the best position for the bearing relative to the cam.

A transmission leak should be repaired as soon as possible. A leak can starve your transmission of the fluid it needs for cooling and lubrication. If a leak is allowed to persist, it can cause the transmission to run low on fluid. This can result in severe damage. At that point, the transmission will need to be rebuilt or replaced.

Leaks are often discovered while your vehicle is parked because fluid droplets can accumulate under your vehicle’s gearbox. Automatic transmission fluid often appears crimson in color. Meanwhile, the fluid in manual transmissions is semi-transparent or honey-colored. Your vehicle will likely exhibit the following symptoms if it’s leaking transmission fluid:

There are also dynamic seals, which typically seal the gap between the transmission case and a rotating shaft. Dynamic seals are more complex, since they have to prevent fluid from leaking between a moving and non-moving component.

Another option is to use an extension spring between the cam follower and the base of the mechanism box. In this situation, the spring is pulling the follower onto the surface of the cam. This works well with hinged cam followers. Finally, you can hang some type of weight from the follower to keep it against the cam. Unlike springs, weights produce an even force throughout the range of motion.

We know it isn’t always easy to find the time to look for quality replacement parts for your vehicle, but a faulty transmission seal is a big red flag you can’t just ignore. Thankfully, you can get a great part with a guaranteed fit here at CarParts.com.

Thanks Dug for sharing your knowledge . I have read a few automata books and they make it so complicating ! You have made it easy to understand and follow.

The biggest challenge I’m finding in making my goofy displays with wiper motors etc is harnessing the motion and redirecting it, so these cams can be very useful.

When the engine’s RPM increases and the vehicle doesn’t speed up normally, then it could be because the fluid level is low and gears are slipping.

Cam followers can take the form of a hinged lever. This has some advantages. First, the bearing is no longer critical because the hinge keeps the follower in position. This can eliminate binding problems associated with the bearing. It is also easy to ensure that a hinged cam follower stays in contact with the cam at all times. Because the entire arm moves up and down, mechanisms can be attached to various locations on the arm. Keep in mind that the output motion of a hinged cam follower is an arc, not a straight line.

Thank-You. As a beginner, slowly feeling my way through making my first simple automata, this is absolutely priceless! I’ve got may how to books but this answers many questions I’ve had an not found an answer to. Simply put yet clear. Thanks again ?

First, let’s start with a few terms. A plate cam or disk cam is the disk-shaped piece mounted on a rotating axle. The cam follower is the the part that rides on the edge of the cam. The bearing or guide is the hole through which the rod attached to the cam follower must pass. The axle rotates, turning the cam with it. The changing diameter of the cam causes the follower to rise and fall. This motion is carried by the follower shaft to some other part of the machine.

An illuminated transmission light could signal different issues. One of which is an overheating transmission caused by the transmission fluid.

Large flat cam followers can be used to create a rotary motion. The trick is to offset the cam follower shaft so that the cam makes contact with one side of the cam follower. If you use one cam in this way, it will rotate the cam in one direction. A round cam in constant contact with the flat cam follower will produce a more or less continuous rotation. A lobed cam will rotate the cam follower periodically or cause it to lift and rotate depending on how close the cam follower is positioned to the cam.

A vehicle typically has two or three dynamic oil seals. One example is the input shaft seal. It prevents fluid from passing through the gap between the input shaft and the transmission housing. The input shaft is the part that connects the transmission to either the torque converter or clutch disk, depending on the transmission type.

Another dynamic oil seal located at the transmission’s output shaft is called the rear transmission seal or driveshaft seal. The output shaft is the part that transfers power to the wheels. Front-wheel drive vehicles have two transmission seals because they have two output shafts, one for each axle.

Nobody likes waiting too long for their packages, but that won’t be an issue. If you order at CarParts.com, you can expect your new transmission seal to arrive in as little as two business days thanks to our strategically located warehouses.

Hello, Perhaps you can help me. I have an automaton of a flying gliding man, but the spring he hangs from is twisted and no longer useable. Might you know where I can get a suitable light and bouncy spring ? Cheers, Nick

You can check the transmission fluid level by looking at the dipstick. A brown-colored one indicates the transmission fluid needs replacing. And if the level is low, there’s a chance a leak drained most of the fluid.

The transmission can accumulate too much heat if there isn’t enough fluid to cool it. This can lead to transmission damage or even transmission failure.
